30th Anniversary Article on the Sherry Murders - Sun Herald
I recently saw this featured on an old episode of "City Confidential". Very fascinating - dirty local politicians vs do-gooder politicians. Throw in incarcerated kingpins running scams on homosexuals and it's pretty damn interesting story.
I know many of you are from the Miss Gulf Coast area - anyone got any personal recollections on this??
One of the men convicted, Dixie Mafia Kirksey Nix, was the alleged assasin of Buford Pusser's wife.
Thr investigation played out for 10 years with one of the men eventually convicted elected mayor shortly after the murders.

Throw in state line mob on that too. Dream room and this book get into their thought processes and day to day lives of these outlaws.

Mississippi Blood by Hewitt Clarke is interesting too.

I just read that - I'm going to read one of these books this weekend while traveling.
These Dixie Mafia types could give the Sicilians a run for their money.
I also read that a new Dixie Mafia has emerged in Milwaukee, WI of all places!!

Kirksey Nix ( Dixie Mafia , Stateline Mob ,Towhead White associate , prison scammer ) was allegedly one of the guys that shot up Buford Pusser and wife.

Halat is in Ocean Springs. I’ve been to all of Gillich’s clubs in Biloxi.

And as I recall, this is why it's interesting who the current mayor is. Fofo Gillich

What is the connection?
That was his uncle. The mayor’s side of the family disassociated themselves from that dude way back. The mayor and the rest of his fam are really good people.

Great book and a bit horrifying that Vince Sherry’s law partner would betray him like that. I remember when this happened. It was big news in the Jackson papers as well as statewide.

Pete Halat served me a beer tonight. The two Gilich/Gillich brothers spelled their names differently long before the one got in trouble. It had nothing to do with one side trying to distance themselves. And Vincent Sherry married my wife and me when he was a judge. And I dated one of the Gillich daughters in college.

Interesting - earlier when I was googling about the Sherry murders, I came across an article that said some Dixie Mafia folks were convinced V Sherry did indeed steal Gillich's money and that both Sherrys were dirty hypocrites. Sherry's daughter had some beef with Halat and goaded an overzealous FBI agent into pursuing the case. She exonerated her parents and hung Halat with one strike. I dunno, have no clue; That's why I was wondering if anyone on here had any real life involvement with any of these people.
Hollywood could make a damn good movie out of this - that is if they leave out Tom Cruise.

I have no real life knowledge but I do seem to remember that the Sherrys’ oldest daughter really pushed the authorities to investigate further than they initially did. Her mother was leading a campaign to shut down the clubs and whorehouses owned by Mike Gillich
