On August 13, 1997, a man wanting to go by the name of "Clay" calls into the Howard Stern show, claiming to have killed multiple prostitutes in the New Orleans area.

YouTube

I had never heard of this. I did a little googling, and discovered this Wiki article:

quote:

The Storyville Slayer is the nickname given to an American serial killer who murdered at least 24 sex workers and drug addicts, most of whom were women, in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1] Through the course of the investigation, two separate suspects were considered, one of whom was convicted of one murder, leading investigators to believe that multiple killers are responsible.[2]

quote:

In May 1995, a task force was established by the New Orleans Police Department, in conjunction with surrounding parishes and the FBI, in order to solve the killings.[2] During a press conference in August, Chief Richard Pennington announced to the media that the current prime suspect was 33-year-old Victor Gant, a police officer working in New Orleans.[2] During the investigations, it was established that Gant had an intimate relationship with one of the victims, Sharon Robinson.[3] As a young man, he was a boxer and regularly went to the gym and did weightlifting, and closely matched the 1991 suspect sketch based on "Brenda"'s testimony.[2] FBI agent Neil Gallagher later clarified that Gant was a suspect only in Robinson and Ivester's murders, and at present, they had no evidence tying him to any of the other killings.[1] In response, Gant's attorney John Reed said that his client was innocent and the evidence was purely circumstantial.[3]

quote:

On August 13, 1997, The Howard Stern Show received a call from a man who identified himself as "Clay". During the conversation with host Howard Stern, which was broadcast live, "Clay" described details for more than 12 murders and gave some details about his background, indicating that he was a white resident of New Orleans.[7] The interview with the potential serial killer caused a massive media publicity, thanks to which FBI agents allegedly went to the studio and seized audio recordings of the call to establish the caller's location and possible identity.[7] In the following years, the credibility of this incident was questioned, as the program regularly received numerous call from people who claimed to have done terrible things, with some alleging that Stern himself faked the call to boost his ratings.

quote:

Ellwood himself denied knowing any of the victims or committing any murders, although he could not provide an alibi. Cheryl Lewis' mother, in turn, admitted that her daughter was a drug addict and a prostitute, but said that she had never seen Ellwood with her daughter before. His attorneys argued that Ellwood was not in New Orleans at the time of the murders, claiming that he had been in Ohio with some relatives. Ellwood was known for keeping extensive amounts of documents that indicate his whereabouts, but the receipts regarding his supposed presence in Ohio for February 1993 had mysteriously disappeared.[8] Ellwood's attorneys then filed a motion for a polygraph test to be performed on Sue Rushing, then-head of the task force, which was granted. During the test, Rushing was unable to answer a series of questions regarding the missing receipts, but the result was inconclusive, casting doubt on Ellwood's guilt.[8] Ultimately, the murder charge for Delores Mack was dropped,[11] but on the basis of very circumstantial evidence and unreliable testimony, Ellwood was found guilty of killing Cheryl Lewis and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole on August 17, 1999.[12]

New Orleans Police produced some of the most corrupt, violent, drug dealing, killers this country has ever seen.

Antoinette Renee Frank (born April 30, 1971) is a former officer of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) who, on March 4, 1995, committed a violent armed robbery at a restaurant which resulted in the killing of two members of the Vietnamese-American family who ran the establishment, and fellow NOPD officer Ronald A. Williams II. She was aided by her probable lover, drug dealer Rogers Lacaze. Frank currently resides at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, the only woman on the state's death row.

They also suspect she killed her father and buried him under her house.

quote:

In 1993, a year and a half before the murders at the Kim Anh, Frank's father had stayed at her home for a time before she then reported him missing. In November 1995, a month after she received her first death sentence, a dog led police to find a human skull with a bullet hole buried under Frank's house. In a 2005 retrospective, Chuck Hustmyre said, "As for those human bones unearthed beneath Frank’s house, so far, authorities have made no serious effort to identify them. The 10-year-old case, they say, remains under investigation."[12]

Depends on who you ask.

Some guy was here not long ago claiming Adam4LSU really had nothing to do with solving the Mickey Schunick case.

didn't even put a dent in the drug addicted prostitute population.

No one even noticed.

I saw this on something awhile back and listened to it. Actually, I listened twice because I wasn't sure the guy was serious, but I came to the conclusion it was someone who couldn't keep it to himself any longer, but obviously didn't want to go to jail.

Didn't he say that there was a policeman who had become a suspect?

Either way, it made me think about Sean Vincent Gills for some reason and how many more women he would have killed if there was no Derek Todd Lee.

I don't know if there is a word to describe how bad that department was in the 90s.

They were the biggest drug dealers in the city. When someone got big enough on the block, they would bust them. Take their supply, find someone else to put on the block, supply and protect them and get half. They pretty much ran the drug game.

Wasn't there some situation that involved police officers who would provide police presence and other resources from the police department to crews shooting movies, but the individual officers were getting paid. They were on the job but also working as a private entity, but using resources paid by tax dollars. I am going to have to see if there is a book on the NOPD in the 90s.

A deputy who worked in the department later attempted to sue them for allegedly firing him for revealing that Rushing had destroyed crucial evidence, but his appeal was rejected due to lack of evidence.

….sheriff’s Lt. Sue Rushing, the leader of the serial killer task force that targeted Ellwood, failed a lie detector test asking if she destroyed or lost receipts that could place Ellwood in Ohio with relatives when the 1993 murders happened.

The test also indicated Rushing was ``not telling the truth? when she denied coaching a witness who claimed Ellwood showed her the two bodies in a canal 20 miles west of New Orleans.

The allegations were made by other task force members, prompting the FBI to investigate Rushing and the task force.

Considering he was convicted these missing receipts seem like a big deal unless Wiki is just inflating this part of story.

Seems like multiple killers including that Victor Gant likely killed Sharon Robinson and Karen Ivester and may been the one who assaulted “Brenda”.

They seemed to group together murdered drug using black prostitutes including two trans and got a conviction on one then left Gant alone and moved on.

They included unrelated murder victims which probably gave some alibis.
