The killing fields in Cambodia are nothing short of horrifying

I was in Northern Thailand in 1998.
Refugees were still escaping Cambodia even though the Khmer Rouge was out of power, Their economy was non-existent and they were starving. Pol Pot was in his last days.
They were selling anything they carried out. Lots of religious stuff. Prayer wheels, scrolls, carved holy man staffs sacred texts and whatever. But the damnedest things were handmade goblets made out of human skulls.
Those were upside down with a wood and leather base. . Others were right side up and decorative with the same type of wood and leather base.
But the top had a little knob so you could lift it off. I guess you could put cut flowers in it or whatever. I assume there was a large supply and people worked with what they had available. Creepy stuff.

None of those. There would likely have been an issue in customs. But came back with a few other items and trinkets they were happy to sell.

Read the account of journalist Tiziano Terzani, Spiegel correspondent in Asia at the time based in Bangkok.
He rushed to Cambodia after the fall of Phnom Penh to cover it, was captured, held for hours, and finally released. He was probably the only journalist that survived an encounter with the Khmer Rouge. His Italien passport probably saved him, as they were accusing him of being in the CIA.
My personal hero.

Crazy they allowed him to die in a hut, in the jungle.

I watched a documentary years ago on the genocide. One guy said he killed thousands of people by strangling them with piano wire. Just casually talking about it and he was never punished for it.

Another leftist hero that will go down in history as a genocidal sociopath.
If any of you ever make the mistake of posting on Reddit, their top moderator that removes anyone with an opinion to the right of Stalin pays tribute to PolPot in their username.
But remember, it is you that is the nazi dictator wannabe.

The amount of people murdered by govts and wars in the 1900s is staggering when you add it up
Lenin and the Bolshevists revolutions
WW1
WW2 and the Holocaust
Stalins purges of millions
Maos Great Leap Forward
Korean War
Vietnam war
Khmer Rouge
Iranian Revolution
Several conflicts in Africa like the overthrow of European colonies and the rise of dictators like Mugabe
Several South American revolutions and conflicts between right wing govts like Pinochet and communist revolutionaries
Castros takeover of Cuba
Operation Desert Storm
One incredibly bloody century. Ukraine and Russia today is child’s play compared the the 20th century

Always enjoyed the story about the British communist and huge Pol Pot fanboy James Alexander Malcolm Caldwell. He was a Scottish academic and a prolific Marxist writer. He was a consistent critic of American foreign policy, a campaigner for Asian communist and socialist movements and a supporter of the Khmer Rouge. Caldwell was murdered a few hours after meeting Pol Pot in Cambodia, though who was responsible for the murder remains debated.

CSB:
Went to Cambodia some years ago and loved it. The temple ruins are incredible. Super nice people.
The killing fields are horrible though.
Also we got bed bugs which was quite a treat.
