Thoughts on Health Sharing Ministries (I.e. Medishare, etc)

Originally posted on Money Talk, but I figured I'd get more responses (useful and useless) here.
My wife (no pics) and I are currently running the numbers on a job opportunity for her, but she wouldn't qualify for any benefits and I'm self-employed.
I've priced plans on the Marketplace but we would make too much to qualify for any subsidies and the plan prices are crazy high.
Can anyone share their experiences or stories? I've looked up all of the previous threads regarding the different health shares but they were all from around 2017.
I'm wondering if anyone has any updates.
Thanks.

so, this is one of those insurance companies that claims to be some type of health share co-op?
If so, they seem to have the best of intentions, but I would have to find out whether they have to follow the same government regulations as regular insurance companies. Those regulations are in place to protect the customers...

They are very up front that they are not insurance. (Pretty sure so they don't have to follow the same rules that insurance companies follow. They don't cover abortions, pregnant out of wedlock, drug abuse, etc.)
Basically it works like insurance you have a monthly premium and a max out of pocket (some are setup differently but this is how the one I am looking at operates)
Once you hit the max out of pocket your bills are posted to the website and the cost is "shared" amongst the members.
However they could deem any bill unshareable if it's for something like tobacco, drug/alcohol abuse, or a pre-existing condition.
I'm not worried about any of those issues, but the thought of them just denying a perfectly normal medical bill makes me a little uneasy.

Well, the don’t fund dicks for chicks like hmo’s. Seriously it works for me and I could have an hmo through work I just decline.

exactly...this would be my concern as well. also, suppose you get an illness and they just drop you...there would be no governmental oversight to prevent that.

It’s a great idea, but it would make me terribly nervous. The amount of participants would need to be extremely high for some complicated cases to be covered. No pun intended, but I would imagine many plans are literally living on a prayer.
If you have money (sounds like you do) I think I’d rather go with traditional insurance with an extremely high deductible/out-of-pocket maximum. Basically, not really health insurance so much as bankruptcy insurance.

Cheapest plan I've found on Healthcare.Gov is ~$1,000 for my family of 4. $15,000 deductible and then 60/40 for a few grand before hitting the max.
Medishare is $250/month. And $10,000 deductible/max our of pocket.
If it was close I'd go with the traditional insurance, no doubt. But differences like that make me consider the alternative.

Got Medishare..great results..best thing is they negotiate behind the scenes to reduce any bill you may owe..

Same. Family premium is about $750 per month for a family of 4, super-healthy, no on-going health issues and no one on any steady meds.
They don't pay all of your bills however. We got a simple lumbar spine MRI bill for a ridiculous $1800 and Medishare paid about half of that, we owe the other $900.

We've been on Medishare fora little over four years now with no complaints

I haven’t done it but a friend of mine has. He did so not out of financial need but because he believes in what they stand for. He and his family own at least two buildings over 30 floors high in downtown Houston to give you an idea of his means.
He likes the plan, likes the way they operate and has had at least two children on it and the cost of the babies was less than normal insurance would have been. His premiums are super reasonable as well.

Had you met your Annual Household Portion? What reason did they give you?

MediShare is actually pretty awful. It's a black box of vague operation into which you put money. You're guaranteed next to nothing in return.
Their FAQs are mostly about what they don't cover. Catch an STD sleeping around? Not covered. Injured in a drunk driving accident? Not covered.
These are their brilliant ideas to fix healthcare? They just sounds mean-spirited to me. Doesn't even seem like these things would really save much money. It's just sanctimonious.
Oh, and you can't join if you're expecting a child- what kind of shite-tier health plan does that? A Christian one?? No, sir.
This is not insurance, and it's not Christianity. "You don't deserve health care because you blew 0.10" is not of Christ, it's of Satan.

no, we hadn't met our annual household portion. I specifically asked for a reduction of balance and did not get one.

I understand that they have rules and if they're not followed then they can deny coverage. I'm okay with that as long as I know and am okay with the rules going in.
It's the uncertainty that gives me pause. However every review from TD members I've read has been positive. I've found negative reviews but mainly for things that shouldn't apply to me.

Can you elaborate more on this? The $900 you paid didn't apply to your out of pocket?

They are under absolutely no obligation to both settle the claim or even if they do, settle it in a timely fashion. Caveat Emptor big time here, folks.
