Thoughts on Huey Long?

I think there should be a distinction drawn between Huey Long the Governor and Huey Long the Senator. Huey Long the Governor- Louisiana probably needed a person like him to stand up to Standard Oil and get the state some roads.
But Huey Long the basically communist Senator- I don’t think that Louisiana needed that.

Just finished Kingfish. I had no idea how radical he was as a senator. He really helped LSU though.

this dead horse has been beaten to a pulp on here before but my dad always said he would have not been able to get an education if it weren't for HPL

He made LSU one of the finest colleges in the South at the time and it’s a shame how much we’re still riding off what he did 90 years ago

If he wasn’t assassinated, he would have eventually became the president of the United States…for life.

His carcass still haunts Louisiana. His brand of populism still has a stronghold on the State.

He set this state back 40 years after he left due to his "legacy." No company wanted to invest in the state after the debacle with Standard (now Exxon). Let's also not forget the Long faction was in charge until the 60's. After getting back on our feet, our retarded electorate put a Longisque back in office in EWE for nostalgia.
Anyone could of "built the roads" and we probably would have built them with less debt with more corporate tax revenue that he ran off.
Edit: LOL at all the downvotes, is it any wonder why this state is so behind in everything when people like this actually vote? Louisiana will never improve.

What he did for the poor and disenfranchised in this state is unmeasurable.

Hopefully he's enjoying himself burning down below this glorious Easter Sunday.

How many are still poor because of Huey Long?

Two bridges across the Mississippi named after him.
That’s probably like a record.

He was a tyrant totally at odds with traditional American values such as
1) free markets
2) right to be left alone economically
3) low taxes
He also is the number one reason Louisiana is being outpaced right now by states such as South Carolina

The top down consolidation of power politics is still the method exploited in the governor's mansion by all parties.
the cronyism and favoritism over meritocracy is ingrained across the state from podnuck town dog catcher to the state capital and every stop in between.

And yet EWE actually built jack shite, unless you count that garish eyesore at the foot of Canal Street.
I’m not even vouching for Long’s “brand of politics” just pointing out how that bastard basically turned it on its ear into pure kleptocracy. Or maybe that’s just the logical endgame.

Ngl, I consider Huey to be one of the most dangerous men of the 20th century. He had a rare combination of ambition, charisma, competence, and ruthlessness rivaled only by the likes of Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, and FDR.
