Thoughts on the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Produced from 2017-2019, this is a four door, AWD wagon offering a manual transmission.
4 cyl
1.8 L
168 hp
22 city/30 hwy
Price for used 2019 model: Around $25k
In the next year or so I will be in the market for a used car (currently driving a 2006 vehicle). I don’t need a truck or SUV, but would like AWD, a decent amount of room, and a manual transmission would be cool.
My only concerns are the current prices, which hopefully will retreat some soon, and maintenance/reliability. Doesn’t seem to have any huge mechanical concerns based on my research so far. I’ve only ever owned Hondas and Toyotas, so this would be my first venture into European territory.
Does the OT give it a thumbs up or thumbs down?

It’s a great car for a 50 year old lesbian

The 2017 is the only one with decent reliability. The smart answer in the segment is Subaru whether you like it or not.

I will never own another VW (unless a classic). But you do you.

Really? Usually the first year is the one you want to avoid.

Not against a Subaru, but don’t love them either.

I wouldn’t drive it if it was given to me for free.
I’d sell it then get a real vehicle

What did you have and what were the issues?

I bought a 2018 Atlas in 2021. It's very spacious, comfortable and fun to drive, but it seems like every maintenance issue is expensive. I just paid $450 for a battery because the damn car had to be 'reprogrammed'. The oil changes are around $125, but it is a 10,000 mile oil change, so that helps a little. Great warranty for models before 2019- 6yr/72K and if it's certified used, you get an extra 1yr/12k. For 2019+, the warranty drops to 5yr/60k.

'14 CC. But the motor design is used across VW & Audi. Great until 90k, then you'll be burning oil like gas and the carbon build up on the intake side causes more issues.
There's a reason why VWs are significantly cheaper on the used car market than Hondas or Toyotas.

Beware of Volkswagen. My experience is costly pain in the arse should you need parts.

Reminds me of a station wagon. And I loved the station wagon we had
Wouldn't buy European though. Repairs too expensive

Lesbian station wagon competition for Subaru.

Generally yes but the stats say the 19 is the worst. The sunroof will leak so avoid them. Coil packs, turbo wastegate, and the water pump are the main issues with the engine. In a lot of ways, VWs are great cars to drive but they do have their issues.
Like most German cars VWs are lots of fun to drive but they lack the reliability of the Japanese but most Japanese cars are as exciting to drive as watching paint dry. In general, Subarus aren't the least fun to drive but they have their baggage.

The Golf R is obviously smaller but it has the advantages of not being a wagon, very fun to drive, better interior while also being all-wheel drive. It is crazy nimble, really good road-trip car, works well in the city, good gas mileage and has surprising room for 4 adults. It'll be more expensive used than the wagon and worth it.

VW is an incredible manufacturer as long as you don’t mind non-functional electronics and inexplicable malfunctions.
I’d argue the only German manufacturer you can buy from with reasonable confidence it won’t end up in a continual repair loop is Porsche and that’s assuming it’s not an electric model.

Keep in mind, you're going to hear from grown arse men in with pristine super-duty trucks that are lifted with wheels that stick out 16 inches from the fender well.
Having said that...I had a VW TDI that was part of Dieselgate. Even before that the service costs were Mercedes-esque in their pricing. I'll probably never do VW again. Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, or Mazda all the way.
