I know this topic has been discussed before but I think it should be revisited. I'm at a local establishment where I enjoyed a delicious meal and a few beers. Food was great, service was good. I tipped 20%. But I noticed the "suggested tip" amount on the receipt and I'm surprised. 30% ??? Are people serious with this shite? I might give 30% if the waitress gives me a bj but since that's never happened I have never tipped 30% and I don't ever intend to.

Like I said I realize it has been discussed before but I feel like it's even worse now. Is 30% really expected? Any restaurant baws here that can chime in? I'm sure some of the OT ballers own restaurants and can shed some light on this absurdity

No.

This is pre-generated by the POS software and the amounts are chosen by the manager who isn't even a tipped employee. It's probably not that serious and just part of the POS setup process, so they go with whatever the implementation specialist/trainer suggests.

That was the suggested tip at the coffee shop the other day. I did custom tip for 10%. It was not table service, I ordered two coffees and a muffin at the counter and picked them up at the other end of the counter.

You should go 40% for that. Screw their pre-calculated amounts.

That’s not what this bill says. But is tipping out of control? Yes. For decent service 15% should be enough and it’s funny that they don’t include that.

IMHO the tip being calculated after tax is a bigger turnoff than the predetermined rates.

And this place probably charges a CC fee as well and then wonders why they can’t keep staff.

I don't tip with a credit card. I leave some cash in the folder. I figure they'd rather that anyway.

As for %, it depends on the level of service or number of people at the table.
