One would like to think this is a rare occurrence but this is likely common.
My daughter was riding in her friends car when they got in a wreck. They slowed to pull into a parking lot when I guy was about to rear ended them. Instead of rear ending them he jerked it up on the sidewalk. He slid in the grass and hit them on the side as they were pulling in.
Cops show up and he tells them she pulled out in front of him. The cop lets him leave and she gets left holding the bill.

...Sounds like your daughter's friend turned in front of oncoming traffic without checking up and caused a crash in spite of the other driver's best efforts to avoid the collision.
