The M36 tank destroyer, formally 90 mm Gun Motor Carriage, M36, was an American tank destroyer used during World War II. The M36 combined the hull of the M10 tank destroyer, which used the M4 Sherman's reliable chassis and drivetrain combined with sloped armor, and a new turret mounting the 90 mm gun M3. Conceived in 1943, the M36 first served in combat in Europe in October 1944, where it partially replaced the M10 tank destroyer. It also saw use in the Korean War, where it was able to defeat any of the Soviet tanks used in that conflict. Some were supplied to South Korea as part of the Military Assistance Program and served for years, as did re-engined examples found in Yugoslavia, which operated into the 1990s. Two remained in service with the Republic of China Army at least until 2001.

Do you have a certain scale you stick to? If so what and why?

I generally stick to 1/35 scale when it comes to vehicles, 1/48 scale in single engine aircraft and 1/72 scale in multi-engine aircraft. Though, I will vary sometimes. As to why those scales, they’re the most common and fit my shelves the best.

Great work! How many finished models to you have and where do you keep them?

You do some damn fine work.
Are these off the shelf model kits? Or custom/hand made?

I always wondered why they didn’t enclose the cupola.

That is one helluva good model

It’s been awhile Darth, but it’s still perfection as always.

Thanks. I really am not sure how many models I have in my model room. I’d guess somewhere around 200?

The thinking was to give the crew better visibility. Though, on later version they did put on a roof.

They’re off the shelf kits. I build, paint, detail, and weather them.

Love your work.
Do you ever do ships?
Is there a club/convention where the model baws get together and talk smack?
I've always wondered why the US didn't build a better tank to take on the zee Germans as the war went on.

My grandpa told me he transitioned from the Sherman to this to this tank. Said the bigger gun made all the difference in the world. Before this model came out they had to utilIze the speed, and agility of the Sherman to compensate for the lack of armor, and fire power.
With the bigger gun they were able to stand off at longer distances, take their shots, and the reposition quickly to take a second.

I loved models as a kid, and wish I had space to do them now.

Who the heck downvotes stuff like this.
The weathering and paint jobs make them look authentic and real. You got skills man.

I’ve done a few over the years. But it’s been a long time. I do have two or three in my stash though.

There is a model club that meets monthly at the hobby shop where I buy most models. I don’t go to the meetings. Though I do go to their annual model show and swap meet.

That’s what the M36 and the other tank destroyers were for. During WWII, US Army armor doctrine was that tanks were not intended to fight other tanks. Instead, tanks were to break through enemy defenses then exploit deep into the enemy rear area. The role of killing tanks was the purview of the Tank Destroyer battalions.

See my last post where I discussed armor doctrine of the US Army in WWII. The primary difference between tanks and tank destroyers was tanks were more heavily armored because they were seen as a breakthrough weapon. Tank destroyers were seen as more ambush or defensive weapons that relied on speed and stealth to engage, then move before they could be engaged. The requirement for speed meant tank destroyers did not have the same armor protection as tanks.
