Energy giant Valero appears to be planning to shut down its oil refinery in the Bay Area.

The company said in a news release Wednesday morning that the California-based Valero Refining Company notified the California Energy Commission of its intention to cease refining operations at its Benicia refinery by the end of April 2026.

Valero added that it continues to evaluate strategic alternatives for its remaining operations in California.

"We understand the impact that this may have on our employees, business partners, and community, and will continue to work with them through this period," said Lane Riggs, chairman, CEO and president of Valero.

In October, the Valero Refining Company was fined $82 million for significant air pollution violations at the Benicia refinery in what was the largest penalty ever assessed by the Bay Area Air District.

The Valero Refining Company also operates a refinery in the Wilmington area of Los Angeles.

The Bay area is finally successful in running Valero out of town! I hope they enjoy their upcoming $8/gallon Gas!

First Phillips 66, now Valero. Are there going to be any refineries left in California soon?

California passed a law blaming natural disasters on climate change with oil and gas companies to blame. Any future fires and the existing refineries will have to pay damages.

Florida doesn't have any refineries if memory serves. They didn't actively run them out of town so much as they'll just never have any. I'm not surprised a coastal state wouldn't want them. Look at Houston.

Not a lot of oil production close to Florida. These refineries popped up somewhat close to production back in the day.

There could be. There is plenty of oil off their coast, but they won’t allow drilling.
They are one of many who don’t mind enjoying the benefits, but aren’t about to allow anything near them.

Well, when most of these refineries were built, there was no reason to build in Florida. They don't have any oil nearby to refine, they aren't in a good transport position to the rest of the country after its refined, and until the turn of the century there weren't that much demand in Florida. CA on the other hand has had demand and isolation forever so they had to build. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. More industry for us.

Look for the California congressional delegation to start pushing to amend the Jones Act.
