It's based on the fact that Lincoln and his law partner William Herndon often slept in the same boarding house beds when they were riding the circuit.
Anyone who's read American history knows beds were often very hard to come by in rural America, and you took what you could get. If you had to sleep two (or sometimes more, with perfect strangers who might be less than hygienic) to a bed you did it and considered yourself lucky not to be sleeping on the floor.
