One last question - does it only make the grinding sound when it's agitating or also when it's on the spin cycle?

Only when agitating. Other then that it runs fine.

Check her teeth, some of them grind their teeth when they're agitated.

I simply took out agitator and the noise stopped. I put agitator back in and still no more noise. I fixed the issue by just taking out and putting back in. Weird.

I own a tiny repair company.

I like LG I don't think they are really cheap quality. My laundry machines are lg.
It's samsung top load washers I don't like, but they have improved a lot.

You probably had something stuck in the agitator.

If it's a whirlpool or kenmore it's good to change the dogs every 3-5 years.

Hotpoint is base level GE.
Not bad. They don't have dogs.

But there are so many variations. Could be a hydrowave, could be an older profile.

I called the number in the link and gave them serial # because noise came back. Told me to check the belt and for faulted teeth.

Could it possibly be a bad agitator coupling? Would that make a loud noise?

I need a model number to help you so I know what you have,

Open the door and look at the top right corner.

ahh a GE Hydrowave. That's the term for the motor drive. It uses a motor with a board on top of it, very expensive part. In fact the motor costs 75% of the cost of a new machine.

As far as common noises for them/

Before you do anything replace the coupler. It's cheap as hell and easy to replace, you were already 90% there when you took the agitator off. #310

agitator coupler

The mode shifter is a common item to start failing and causing issues.

#320 on the diagram. If the noise is only in agitate I would look there next.

unfortunately you also need a special tool to stretch the belt back on. it does not go on easy, and without the tool it ain't happening, I've tried.

I'm going to link a forum that people mention similar issues.

LINK

Here is a link that tells how to test the mode shifter.

LINK

Since the noise isn't during spin it's not going to be the tub bearing or the belt or pulley.

It's either the coupler (yay) or the Mode shifter(boo)

I would charge $300 to change a mode shifter so many times people toss them. You can diy for close to $150.

Wow man thanks. I ordered a new coupler and hope that's what it is. I'd rather buy a new machine than spend too much

Only the agitator turns when washing. The tub doesn't move.
