Can’t imagine what it’s like living back then with everyone dropping dead
Plague Doctor
A plague doctor was a medical physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague.[1] In times of epidemics, such physicians were specifically hired by towns where the plague had taken hold. Since the city was paying their salary, they treated everyone: both the wealthy and the poor.[2] However, some plague doctors were known to charge patients and their families additional fees for special treatments and/or false cures.[3] Typically they were not professionally trained nor experienced physicians or surgeons, but rather they were often either second-rate doctors unable to otherwise run a successful medical practice or young physicians seeking to establish themselves.[1] These doctors rarely cured their patients; rather, they served to record a count of the number of people contaminated for demographic purposes.

The point of the beak was to stuff in spices and herbs and breathe through them.

Black Death
The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30–60% of Europe's total population.[6] In total, the plague may have reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million down to 350–375 million in the 14th century.[7] It took 200 years for the world population to recover to its previous level.[8][9] The plague recurred as outbreaks in Europe until the 19th century.

I read a long description of this recenty in a book that covered the plague in depth. The doctors weren't great. But they did have some expertise and know how greater than most other people around. A lot of them were university trained and the book did have a long list of stuff the average doctor could diagnose and/or cure

what the hell did the doctor do? scare the shite outta the patients with that mask?

Plus it was a physical barrier, keeping the doctors face a distance from the patients.

i love the term "butt stuff." My friend's (an erstwhile famous TD poster) 4-year old daughter said it once, obviously not talking about anything prurient, and I almost peed.
