21-year-old Elisa Lam, a Canadian woman found dead in a Los Angeles hotel rooftop water tank. She'd been in the tank for 19 days and guests drank the water.

Is that water potable? I thought it was for emergency fire suppression?

Three guys were trapped in the forward hold of the West Virginia for a few weeks after the Japs sank it. People on land standing watch could hear them banging against the walls begging for help, but there was absolutely nothing anyone could do to save them.

The person that was chopped up at the mattress factory sounds pretty bizarre - how did that happen??

Or being crushed by the hard rock hotel.

Personally - I knew someone that fell between some furniture and suffocated.

Yes, hotel guests did drink water from the same supply that contained Elisa Lam's body. The Cecil Hotel's rooftop water tanks were the source of drinking water for guests, and Elisa Lam's body was found in one of those tanks. This meant that guests were likely drinking water that could have been contaminated for at least 19 days before the body was discovered.

This isn't bizarre in the way he died, but under what circumstances. The older brother of a friend of mine, a dedicated husband and family man was killed in a car wreck. He was in the passenger seat of a car being driven by a woman that was not his wife. Both were killed. She had a ran a stop sign and they were t-boned by a large truck. Both families were devastated, not only by their deaths, but also because of the obvious affair (neither family knew each other).

Fast forward a few weeks after the funeral, and my friend's wife notices that her late husband's dirt bike was missing. His brothers decided to investigate. Was it stolen? Not likely. They decided to go search some trails that he used to go ride, which turns out wasn't far from where he got killed in the car wreck. Sure enough they found his bike, wrecked badly.

It turns out he wrecked his bike and had a compound fracture to his lower leg. He managed to drag himself to the highway and flag down help. The woman who picked him up was trying to rush him to the hospital when they got in the wreck.

August in Louisiana. Afternoon thunderstorms daily. Rural homesite with a long driveway. 7 newspapers on the ground.
Found man in the chicken coop, upright. His drum tight overalls caught on a nail.
The chickens were well fed.
Bad scene all around.

if you don't mean that we personally knew: One I can think of is the scuba diving trip where the couple was not counted for and left behind in the ocean

Unless you were a hungry chicken, then it was nirvana.

A guy fell in to one of the cast in place concrete pilings when they first started pouring concrete for the new Atchafalya bridge at Krotz Springs. The guys working with him alerted the supervisor and the supervisor told them to keep pouring concrete. Nothing could be done to safe him.

Well the legend lives on, from the Twitter (called X now), and the jokes and the memes that came to me,

Now it may be poor taste, ( they were turned into paste), but I'll tell how some folks met their doomy...

The actual death isn't bizarre, but its a story my mom told me one time. A boy she graduated with bought a motorcycle the summer he graduated. His mom didn't want him to have it, she had someone else in her life who had died from a motorcycle wreck (maybe someone she dated) so she nagged him about it.

One day he was going to go to Baton Rouge on the motorcycle and she didn't want him to go and they got into a huge argument and got on the bike and left pissed off. About an hr and a half later the police went to her house to inform her that her son had been killed on hwy 1.

My mom knew the family and she said the mother went into a depression and years later got sick and died. She blamed herself because she thought that he was driving.. I guess pissed off or if he would have just let him go without arguing with him he would have not been mad or wouldn't have been at the spot where he was hit.

I just think that's a bizarre story.

I think we've heard that about every major concrete structure since the Hoover dam.

Good story, all fiction

Legendary retired dodgeball player and coach, confined to a wheelchair, had a giant sign fall on him the night before his team's championship match against the vaunted Purple Cobras.

Crushed by 2 tons of irony.

Paria Fuel Trading co. / Trinidad Tobago Oil pipeline accident in 2022

Divers sucked into oil pipeline, one crawls/ swims out, rescuers refuse to go after others despite survivor saying they (at least one) were still alive.

Instead send a pig to push the bodies out. Which probably finished off the others. Helluva way to go.

This one seems to still be getting actively scrubbed from search results and the wiki is a fraction of the length it used to be. (Still being settled in court.)

Good rabbit hole for a Friday. There's also gopro video if you're so inclined. I'm not posting it.
