Maybe a dumb question, but I have no idea where it came from. I'm guessing either baseball or Nascar.

The term Bush league came about sometime between 1905-10 to describe a minor league sports teams, especially in Baseball

NASCAR's Busch league was actually named after the beer.

I believe it refers to when minor leagues were developed in smaller communities that didn't have major league teams. These minor league teams were comprised of inferior players, but a good way to pass the time. The games were played in fields or parks with bushes all around, thus the term bush league.

Local minor league parks simply did not rival the expanse and majesty of the major league fields. In fact, minor-league fields with bushes all around the perimeter were often the rule of thumb. This led to minor league associations being referred to as bush leagues. The concept also played on the fact that the players who made up the teams were usually employed in various lines of work and played baseball on the side. Because the teams were composed of players who did not embrace baseball as their profession, the quality of the play was often perceived as being inferior in some manner. This sense of inferiority came to be closely identified with the concept of being bush league in nature, and to this day is used to refer to something that is not quite professional in quality.

bush league
A slang term used to describe play that is of minor league or unprofessional quality. The "bushes" or the "sticks" are small towns where minor league teams may operate, the latter term also used in the acting profession, famously in the Variety headline of July 17, 1935, "Sticks nix hick pix", meaning small towns reject motion pictures about small towns.
