What to wear at a Mardi Gras themed charity event?

I'm guessing we have a couple of folks here experienced in the Mardi Gras thingy.
What would be some basic suggestions for getting into the Mardi Gras spirit/what to wear?
This charity has a theme every year and some go all out. I'd like to do a little more than wear beads but not go all out like this.
Any suggestions?

How formal is it?
If it's very formal, just rent a tux, but get a cumberbund in a mardi gras color. Green usually looks the best. Wear beds, but not too many
If it's casual, then get creative

Some will be in jeans and a button down, some will go all out with colored suits, a few will be in a tux. It's all over the board.

A lot of Mardi Gras balls are white tie formal.
Some are costume balls, and some parties a Perlis Polo is good enough.
Really depends on the dress recommended.

How do you normally dress for events like this? I wouldn't go balls to the wall nutty, but incorporating something business casual with Mardi Gras colors would probably be alright

I'm thinking jeans, green or purple dress shirt if I can find one, a black sports coat and some beads. If I'm feeling froggy, maybe a mask.
