No one thing will stop it, generally speaking, except for the obvious. Here are things that will make it more difficult or prolong the process:

Foreign trips
Being born outside the country or married to someone born outside country
Frequent communication with people outside the country
Drug use
Arrest record
Significant indebtedness, particularly on credit cards
Several marriages and divorces
Chronic late bill payment
Alcoholism
Advertised sexual fetishes
Academic misconduct charges from school
Health issues

It's a long list and the clearance people can pretty much deny it for whatever reason they want. I went through the process several years ago, but didn't get the job.

One of my fraternity brothers went to work for the NSA. His roommate had been born in Canada and the investigators were all geeked up about that it didnt keep him from getting a clearance but he had to jump through a lot of hoops.

Any decent background check company will always reach out to the ISIS HR department to see if you're a member.

Yeah, but those frickers will only verify membership. They won't comment on your experience.

EDIT: Dear CIA, NSA, DIA, or my mom: if you see this, it's a joke and please don't waterboard me.

Great point.

I have security clearance with the FAA. Old friends that you list as references will periodically be sent a questionnaire concerning your character. An agent for the FBI has interviewed me about another individual whom I worked with. Stay clean and be truthful.

Just got re-investigated for my TS/SCI last year. I asked our Security Manager why I had to fill out a SF86 when he could just call China.

He was not amused.

Just be honest.

For secret clearance felonies and past drug use is ok if over 7 years ago.

Not sure about TS or TSSI.

Don't leave out anything.

And like stated, financial trouble is biggest killer.

They are looking to see if you are honest and if you can be blackmailed. If they find anything that shows you were anything less than honest you will be denied.

Has anyone had to go through a polygraph portion for clearance? About 5 years ago when I was on the job prowl, the description for a job (can't remember what position or even agency anymore) stated a polygraph test was required.

I immediately closed browser and did not continue with application.

One of the Delta Force casualties from the Iraq war was profiled in the news. He basically grew up homeless, bouncing between foster families and distant relatives. Hard to imagine a sketchier background, but it didn't keep him from getting a clearance..

Keeping a private server in your basement with classified documents would certainly prevent you from gaining security clearance. At least I would assume it would.

It really depends on the level of clearance needed. There is a huge difference between a Secret and Top Secret Clearance investigation. Also a TS Clearance may require if needed a Lifestyle Polygraph.

A Secret clearance will basically confirm who you are, where you are from and that you are not are not a convicted criminal. Secret clearance is easy to get.

A Top Secret (DoD) Class Q (DoE) has different types each with different requirements. Basically a TS investigation will look at the last 10 years of your life and the people with whom you associate. They investigate everything finances, work, school, friends, your personality, clubs you belong to, and your general lifestyle.

A TS with a Polygraph will go over the findings of the investigation and put you on a polygraph. They will often stress on things that you could be blackmailed or compromised over, homosexual tendencies, cheating on your spouse, addiction issues ...

Lying or shaky finances.

If you did something, tell them because they will likely find out and if they do, that kills your chances.

I have a TS and they talked to my neighbors, co-workers, friends... It was pretty thorough.

Pretty much anything a foreign intelligence service could use to either blackmail or curry favor with you.

Extreme debt can be solved with money.

Failure to keep it zipped can be exploited.

Also non work related travel to places like Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, etc. is a possible indicator of sympathies.

Foreign born spouses are also problematic.

I had to submit additional forms, .

Trying to remember the names and addresses of the your neighbors from when you were 13 is tough.
