WBRZ 10 pm news anchor John Mahaffey used to beat a path out of the station after news was over and would normally be at The Patio by 10:40. And then close the place down.

Bought all my football pads and helmets there for BREC Sherwood Hawks Football
I played for the Uniroyal Bucs (Broadmoor) in '75. First ever football game was against the Sherwood Hawks on a Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium. Every stich of equipment I wore for football for years was from The Athletic House. Had some sweet white adidas.

My older used to hang out at Bert's Cameras & Records all the time at the Delmont Village location. That was during the early 70's.

Of course being there usually meant I was in trouble at school (St Anthony’s)

I left around 1990. When I came back about 10 years later the city had definitely changed, symbolized by what had happened to Gardere
Late 80s during college, my girlfriend (now wife [no pics]) lived off Bayou Fountain and that area and Gardere/GSRI was a mix of LSU students and younger blue collar whites. We probably ate at Sammy's (only just opened) once a week.

Do any of you recall the story about the light across the river from Baton Rouge? Story went something like if you stood looking at the light it would just stay there but if approached it, it would disappear. I never went to look at it but it was something that some guys claimed to see during my early years at LSU. Some people said that it was swamp gas and others claimed that it was something supernatural. The crap that you believed when you were young. Anybody remember Count Macabre(sp) and Doctor Shock who were on local TV stations?

All the news crew used to be bellied up to the old Cotton Club bar on Highland between the 6 and 10 broadcasts.

We recalled the name! It was Leisure Landing!

I was at LSU in the very early ‘70s when the PMAC was brand new and the concerts were just really getting started, even full houses for The Carpenters and Bread and George Carlin. Then Elvis packed the PMAC in 1973 and the concerts really began.
Most memorable in ‘70-74 was the fanaticism that was LSU football on campus and the dawn of Daddy Dale and his Hustlers teams.
Of course, bra-less tank tops and ultra short jeans were burned into your eyes on any stroll from class to class.
My new wife and I lived in a new mobile home at the Cedarcrest Trailer Park off Airline which was then filled with married students and was without trees and was spotless. Now it’s like a border town.
I’ve lived off and on in BR for 40 of my 71 years and still love it but am saddened by the downturn in both its lifestyle and image. This Big Country Town has finally caught up with the other big American cities and that is not a good thing.
Now retired in the O’Neal Lane area I seldom see downtown, LSU and northern BR. And I fear the Progressive regimes will just make it even worse.
But I still have all my CDs. Life can still be good in BR.

I bought vinyl at Bert's on Sherwood.
FTR, have been gone for so long I'm not sure what's left.
Haven't read all 15 pages but will mention:
- It had a thriving music scene
- Leisure Landing was the best record store around.
- Piccadilly was a very good place to eat
- Goudchaux's Maison Blanche was a great dept store

Probably sucked other than LSU.

Still have my Savards series 700 in my living room. Almost 4' tall. Bought them ~1982 or so
My brothers and I bought Savard speakers in the late 70s. As far as I know, they're still rocking today (at my brother's).
Just an amazing quality and product.

I lived on the dead end street behind Memorial Stadium, Elerslie. Wouldn't even drive there now in daylight without my AR locked and loaded!

There was a pond where the Lowe’s, Sams, and Walmart is today. Slayed quite a few bass out that pond back then. They had a rope swing too. Good times.

Used to party at that lake until a friend fell from that swing. Almost killed her.
