What weighs more, a gallon of water, or a gallon of butane?

A gallon of water because Butane is a lighter fluid.

It is funny because it is also true.

But what if the thief comes back and pays for the butane?

I don't think it matters as long as the temp and pressure are the same for both. So STP or 100 ATM/-40C water is always denser than butane.

On a side note, many gasoline blenders blend about 10% butane into the winter gasoline blends. They can meet the EPA Reid vapor pressure requirements for winter blend with 10% butane. Why butane? It's cheap, usually less than a dollar a gallon.

FYI, STP is 60 degrees F and 1 ATM (14.7 psig).

Yes, and 100 ATM @ -40C (which is also -40F) is significantly different which was my point.

Even if liquified, water is heavier than butane
