What's the going rate for A/C freon

Central A/C Unit is out of freon and A/C guy wants to charge $100. per lb.
Unit takes 8 lbs. Is he over charging?
The unit is a Trane & about 8 years old.
UPDATE - A/C guy just called and said I need to replace the outside unit and keep the coil & replace the expansion joint. Unit is a 5 ton Trane. He's supposed to call tomorrow with pricing.
What's the expansion joint and does it sound like bs?

If you're 8 pounds down you've got a godd little leak. They've finally made a Fix A Flat type leak additive by the way. Ask about it.

Depends on what is in your system now. If its an old system expect them to go in dry.

They prefer “transgender” these days

Yep, I had mine done with this the year before last and so far so good

Is this a new install? depending on size of unit and length of Freon or coolant lines they usually hold 8-10 lbs of coolant.
Not to be a know it all but if you haven’t done so I’d suggest they check for a leak.

You can buy the R134a stuff at auto zone and put it in yourself, they have a kit for $50 or so.
I have an old 1997 GMC Sierra we keep to haul stuff off that won't blow cold, I added the kit last year and it helped a little.

Better posted to the Home & Garden Board
$100 per pound is the going rate for R-22 refrigerant (R-22) but I would think an eight year old unit would be using R410A refrigerant - 410A should be much cheaper than R-22 but I don’t know the going rate.
Is the system entirely devoid of refrigerant? Any system requiring more than 3 lbs of refrigerant, and certainly 8 pounds, has a significant leak that should be identified and repaired before being recharged. Evaporator coil leaks, usually requiring replacement, are common in HVACs that age.

TBH, that is to the low side for R22. 8 lbs means you have a bad leak though.

He’s talking about a central unit in a house.

Explain please -
I'm car stupid but tried that (R134a stuff) and it didn't work very well. What should I try to get a 97 Sierra Blowing Cold without spending a bunch of money. I drive it 3-4 times a year but usually in the summer and after working in the heat it would be nice to have some AC.
The fan blows and I can hear the AC kick in but the air doesn't change temps.
Seems to cool if I can keep it on the road at a high speed

the guy is asking about a Trane unit for his house not an automobile.

R22 I charge $200 for the first 3#s total after that it’s $80 per pound.
I can drop R421A as a drop in replacement for $50 a pound
