A buddy of mine will turn 50 in July. He just put his retirement notice in to his boss that his last day will be May 1st.

He and his family are selling almost everything they own. Gonna buy a 48 ft catamaran and sail around the world for 10 years. After that they’re going to pick a place to buy a house and settle down in.

Needless to say, I’m kinda jealous.

I guess he has no children.

Or doesn’t care about not seeing them.

Or ever being a grandpa.

This guy gets it.. Ill be 50 myself in a few short years.. we just never know how many more years we’re gonna get, no matter how old we are- but at 50 life becomes even more precious and uncertain .. Just tell him to beware of pirates on the open seas, but im guessing he’s already taking precautions .

Man, if I sold out I could've done that long ago.

Seems like the adventure would die down after a year or two and you'll be looking for something familiar for a while, if not to call home permanently.

I retired from the military 2 years ago with 31 years. I’m working now because my youngest is still in school. She graduates next May and I’ll be done. I’ll be 52.

Always gotta have negative Nancys to bring down everyone else’s hopes and dreams … maybe they dont want children ? Or maybe they have a plan to see them every so often, or meet up with them at various destinations ??

My buddy is an Iraq War Vet. He’s getting VA disability for it. Then got in at an IT software design startup about 15 years ago. And worked his way up towards the top of his company. All that and he and his wife were much better at managing money than I was.

My uncle, the youngest of four children never had a real job. Never married and no kids. He was born rich in 1948. Just lived off his residual income and hunted and fished almost every day.

I have things arranged for me to retire at 56 (12 more years). I guess that's pretty good. Beats the shite out of slogging it out to 65.

His oldest is at La Tech. His middle is about to get accepted to the Naval Academy, both of them are Eagle Scouts. His youngest will be on the boat with them for 2 years.

Shell geophysicist at 53 years old. Bought a big RV and followed LSU football home and away games. Work for a major oil company 30 years and you’ll retire a millionaire. IBM as well for senior engineers and managers.

30

Grandfather left him a ton of money (tens of millions) in a trust. He does nothing but collect a huge check every month.
