Where did the false concept of “heat lightning” come from?

I’ve heard many a baw say this, and I just shake my head in disbelief. What’s actually happening is they’re seeing lightning from a thunderstorm that’s too far away to be heard.

I don’t think anyone was dumb.. they didn’t know what they didn’t know. It comes from those hot summer nights when there are popup thunderstorms. They would see lightning flashes from off in the distance and couldn’t see or didn’t know there was a thunderstorm that far off. Not dumb at all..
We can pull up a radar and see where storms are relative to our location, they couldn’t. How would you explain lightning flashes on a clear summer night when you didn’t see a thunderstorm in sight, smart guy?

It started before TV and radar. People didn't know what was happening at a distance away.
They couldn't see the lightning bolts, hear the thunder and it wasn't raining, so they tried to make sense of it.

It’s just a saying. And it makes sense because usually it’s warm and not raining outside. I don’t think very many people think the heat causes lightning, it’s just the condition when it happens. I think most know it’s just lightning far away.

Heard it from my Grandma growing up in KY. Lol, I never questioned it. If I saw lighting but no thunder I just said it was ''heat lightin''.

I mostly heard the term as a kid at the beach. Even in flat places like Louisiana, you normally have your vision blocked by trees, buildings, etc. But at the beach, you can see out over the water to the horizon. Because most of us were going to the beach in the dead of summer, it made some bit of sense.
As an adult, I know it’s not true, but I have a hard time blaming people for believing their eyes and ears without reliable data to the contrary.

All lightning has heat as a root cause just like all weather so it isn't really wrong although it is just a name for a visual (and lack of auditory) phenomenon.

Plenty of country folk definitely think heat lightning is a real thing caused by warm summer nights.
