Which drives an economy more - Greed or Envy?
Posted on 4/22/25 at 10:59 am

Is it the want of more?
Or
Is it the want more of what the other person / people has / have!
Which of these has more impact on economy (whether it be consumption or production side)? Charlie Monger (RIP, Berkshire-Hathaway) says Envy wins the day. Got me thinking to change my mind from greed.
What says you?

I'd say "keeping up with the Jones'".
That keeps consumers buying and dictates what they buy.

Which could be envy I guess. But greed helps as well.

Then the answer to the OP would be envy.

Google Mazlow's hierarchy of needs to find answers to your question. Its about a 60 year old study that has value for the ages

Envy is just a sub category of greed. The other economic emotion you are looking for is fear.

I think it’s wrath
Boomers hate millenials so much that they voted to destroy the economy so that millenials could never buy a house

to me it's greed
i think the prevalence of "keeping up with the joneses" is overstated. people want nice shite because it's nice, not because their neighbor has it

Greed and envy are correlative as aspects of selfishness. Both are drivers of consumerism and those who capitalize on those appetites.
If you're strictly looking at appetites, then "libidinal economy", might capture the essence of your line of thinking. I haven't studied it, but understand the guy who coined the term and wrote the book on it based it somewhat on Freud, and I think some aspect of Marxism.

Fwiw, in his later life the author denounced his own work as evil, though you can find some still pushing his ideas. I suspect I would take issue with it, but it probably does have some good insights worth understanding.

Kind of the same thing, no? The only real difference is one is driven from within and the other from the outside. Either way they both make us do some incredibly stupid shite at times....

Greed is good (economically speaking). Everyone pursuing their own self-interest promotes work, sacrifice, and market response.
You don't get wealthy unless you provide what the markets needs or wants, and can find ways to do it efficiently and competitively. In theory, greed drives you to provide the best quality at the most competitive price point, which benefits the consumer.
Envy leads to punishing success for the sake of the unsuccessful. It destroys incentives for improvement and progress. Envy is for the losers in life who want to stay losers.

I think "need" is about as big a driver of the economy as either....
Not in actually physical needs like food and shelter but in things we convince ourselves we need. Take a boat for example. Its not greed to want to own a boat, especially an inexpensive basic boat. Its not a matter of envy....might be envy that drives one to but a better boat but again a simple inexpensive boat is not exactly something many people would envy...but "needing" that boat (wanting it) is the chief driver of many things we wind up buying....we want it....not out of greed, which is normally considered somewhat selfish and obsessive, where wanting is simply desiring something.....I want a blowjob, for example. I am not greedy and want one everyday ( I also lie LOL) just one every once in a while. Just wanting something is probably more common than being greedy about owning it....most of us are fine with a basic form of transportation, we need it, we want it, but we aren't greedy, we do not buy 7-8 of the damned things or one that is insanely expensive or over the top....

Only if it were someone else's pussy....OPP as they say....
Most men are greedy when it comes to pussy....we can't get enough (or pretend like we can't, as we age we certainly can get enough LOL) and are obsessed with the idea. We are, at times, also envious of someone else getting some. More often than not we simply conclude we WANT some....and then there is the biological imperative which drives our NEED for pussy....lot going on with the economics of pussy....
