Is Carp that bad tasting that a place overflowing with the stuff isn't ripe for opportunity? Why wouldn't someone use it for pet food or fish oil if so? It seems like it's a simple fix with a two-sided win to me

quote:
In Kentucky Lake, a giant reservoir on the Kentucky-Tennessee border, silvery Asian carp the size of healthy piglets flop out of the water, sometimes hitting boats. They are everywhere—and creating an economic problem.
The invasive fish are scaring away tourists and threatening recreational fishing businesses because most anglers seek crappies and bass, not the bottom-feeding Asian carp. Southern states are ramping up efforts to control the problem, but some officials worry they may be too late.
For years, Midwestern states and the federal government have spent millions of dollars on research, electric barriers and other methods to keep Asian carp from infiltrating the Great Lakes and hurting its ecology and $7 billion annual fishing industry.
The fish, often weighing 15 or 20 pounds and sometimes more, slam into hulls and leap into boats, sometimes hitting people. They reproduce year-round, with their spawn quickly growing too large for potential predators. They eat up much of the plankton, upsetting the food chain and hurting popular fish species. Businesses have tried to get Americans to start eating carp, so far with little success.
David Alvey, 37 years old, who has lived and fished on the 160,000-acre lake his entire life, said small businesses have seen visits from out-of-towners decline as the carp have spread.
“You’ll hear them hit the bottom of your boat all the time,” he said. “It’s always a concern that one of them is going to fly up and hit some kid on your boat.”

Yes. It's awful.
ETA - it's not a bad taste, it's just full of bones.

Only thing carp is good for is bowfishing.

So far I've found this:
The article also talks about the bones.
Edit:
And here's a YouTube video of that Chef explaining everything about that fish. He's from Baton Rouge the article says.
quote:Asian carp: Clean taste, bad image
Part of the Asian carp’s poor image stems from its name. It’s often confused with the common carp, a bottom feeder with a flavor sometimes referred to as “muddy.” The Asian carp, in fact, is a clean fish that feeds on plankton and algae in the upper water of rivers.

I know fly fishermen here who pretty much only hunt carp these days. A much tougher challenge than the stocker browns and rainbows in our area.

That's interesting. Perhaps a rebranding is in order, similar to lobster.

Have I tried carp? No. Would I? Yes. I have heard that it is really quite good. One restaurant in Paducah, Kentucky, has it on the menu as Kentucky Blue Fish.
Commercial processing of Asian carp has launched in Wickliffe, Kentucky. Two Rivers Fisheries opened a few years ago with most of their processed product being exported to China. I drive by it on my way to and from my boat. It was recently announced that Chinese investors are going full tilt to get in on the action..

That seems like an easy fix. Change the name.

I'd like to know how they clean them. I've heard they are a bone bomb

Not sure about those Asian carp but those common carp and blue buffalo are not bad tasting, just have a lot of bones. The “blue buffalo” don’t have as many and more people eat the common ones.
This is what I’m referring to as a common carp.

Yep I grew up in Western PA and the creeks were filled with carp - fun as hell to go bowfishing/spearfishing.
