Going West
In a covered wagon
Get along mule
Giddy-up giddy-up
In spite of the dangers
Going through Indian countries
We're gonna cross
The Cumberland Gap
The Cumberland Gap

Where a man isn't judged
By his money or his name
Where you walk up to a stranger
And say "Howdy" just the same
And the only thing that matters
Is your courage and your heart
Because the past is all behind you
And you'll make a brand new start

Going West
In a covered wagon
Get along mule
Giddy-up giddy-up
In spite of the dangers
Going through Indian countries
We're gonna cross
The Cumberland Gap
The Cumberland Gap

Where a woman's dreams are planted
In her precious piece of land
Where a castle is a cabin
Every timber piece by hand
And she has no silk nor satin
But her heart is filled with pride
Because she's building up her future
With her family by her side

Going West
In a covered wagon
Get along mule
Giddy-up giddy-up
In spite of the dangers
Going through Indian countries
We're gonna cross
The Cumberland Gap
The Cumberland Gap

Where a boy can climb a mountain
And nearly reach the sky
Where there's fishing and there's boating
In the woods and streams nearby
And you grow up in the open
And you grow up mighty glad
That you were born to be a pioneer
Like mom and dad

Going West
In a covered wagon
Get along mule
Giddy-up giddy-up
In spite of the dangers
Going through Indian countries
We're gonna cross
The Cumberland Gap
The Cumberland Gap

I remember learning (and singing) this song in elementary school in the 70s. Anyone else?

We had moved on to the more contemporary

“She’ll be comin’ round the mountain” when I was a ute in the 80’s.

I’m sure I know it bot I just can’t place it on lyrics alone. Sing a few lines and let me hear how it sounds

I've been trying to find this song for a while now. I didn't learn it in school, but in the mid 70's, we used to sit around an old record player, listening to it on scratched up 33's.

I wanted to play it for my daughter, and thought I'd find it on youtube, and have it playing shortly... but I can't find it there... or anywhere!

The only mention I can find of this song online, is your lyrics here, and the first verse lyrics on another website. Your lyrics, are slightly different than theirs.

The version I've been singing in my mind for the last 45 years, is different. "Where a boy can climb a pine tree tall... And nearly... Touch the sky", along with a few other small differences is how it plays in my mind. But, that's with 45 years of potential changes.

Where did you find these lyrics? Do you know of anywhere that may have the original recording?

I DO! I sang a solo for part of it…”where a castle is her cabin”…that part.
I have looked for this song for YEARS!

Can the National Park at Cumberland Gap help?

If they've any initiative, if they don't know the answer, they could use this for publicity.
