Why do people on The First 48 confess?

Been binge watching it since last night. Most of the time, the detectives don't have enough evidence to charge these idiots, and they have to get a confession. Then, the perps just end up confessing. If they just shut their mouths, they would probably walk a couple of months down the line, but instead they get to spend the rest of their lives in jail.
It seems like the only people who don't confess are the younger people and the career criminals. Middle-aged people always confess.
Are they just that dumb?
Is it guilt?
Are they trying to justify killing the other person?
Why wouldn't they just ask for a lawyer and shut their mouth?

It's fake

Because criminals are that stupid. They also must not know about capital murder either.

I'm guessing it is fake like that show Scared Straight.

They are idiots.
However, I saw one episode where two young men were obviously pros.
The cops separated them, of course, and started their interrogation.
The cops in one room were saying, "We you know you and your buddy killed him. He's going to roll over on you right now. He's going to get the deal."
The kid laughed and said, "Yeah right! That dude is a bitch! I bet you he is crying and begging for his mom right now!"
Sure enough, in the other room, the other dude would not stop crying and begging for his mom. He cried so loudly that the detectives could not get a single word in.
They were eventually released and the show said the case was still open.
If they did do it, they were brilliant about it.

psychology
always remember this: as humans, we have a strong desire to help and communicate with people
there is a science to getting a confession. these detectives have been trained in it

Me too. It's currently my favorite show. Did you see the Derrick Todd Lee one yet?

Its fake
Is it? I've often wondered that because that should would get a lot of those witness killed by the shite they say on camera. I would think A&E would get sued by a witness family after they showed a witness giving a statement and that witness be murdered 2 days later because of it.

Well what stops them from lawyering up as soon as the tough questions start getting asked? I mean, even if I shoot someone breaking into my house, I'm asking for a lawyer before I give a statement. As soon as it happened, I'd go into CYA mode
They watch the same shows as everyone else. How do they not figure it out by now?

its not fake. the witnesses are usually blurred out.
Guy in alabama killed 3 relatives and he broke down and started saying "I cut her" "I cut him" etc but held back how may times he had stabbed them. It was a gruesome scene and he probably stabbed the 3 over 80-90 times.

many of them want to know what the police know and think they can talk their way out of it.

a. you'd be shocked how many people think they're going to out-smart the cops and get released
b. the cops entice them into talking. for lesser crimes it's typically telling them if they cooperate, they'll go to the just THEMSELVES and say the defendant cooperated and ask the judge for a low low bond
if you are guilty, you know that if you get brought in, the odds are you'll get charged and have to sit in jail for a while. some people will do what it takes to get out of it, starting with a-b. then they fall victim to our human issues and voila, confession

Like it matters anymore. All you have to do is bring them in for questioning (say they are not suspects), ask them if they killed the person, they will remain silent, and you can use their silence against them in court.

These people murder folks over like 40 bucks. They're probably not scared shitless of getting in trouble like normal people are.
