Actually, it would probably be even more unbalanced. There are more male athletes total and more female gay athletes total, so the ratio of lesbian athletes to total female athletes would likely be much higher than the ratio of male gay athletes to total male athletes.
As for why, I doubt anyone can know for sure. I'd speculate that sports are generally considered a masculine pursuit (at least at higher levels, like college and beyond), so any female athlete has to be willing at least to some degree not to conform to stereotypical gender roles. It follows logically that lesbians would be more likely than other women not to conform to those roles, so they would be disproportionately overrepresented among female athletes. For males, the effect might be opposite. Gay men might be less likely than straight men to conform to typical gender roles and be involved in traditionally masculine or macho activities like sports, so they might be disproportionately underrepresented among male athletes. The combination of overrepresentation of lesbians among female athletes and underrepresentation of gays among male athletes would produce a higher ratio of lesbians than gay men in sports.
Well, damn....I have nothing to add. Spot on, Nuts4LSU

There you go. Women athletes = homosexuals or hypersexual. The one woman track athlete I dated was a fricking FREAK! All day every day. Drove me insane.

Obviously, we don't know about closet gay male athletes, so we can only go by the number of openly gay and lesbian athletes. I assume your point is that lesbian athletes are more likely to be out than gay male athletes are, and I certainly can't disagree with that. I do doubt, however, that it explains all of the apparent difference in ratios, although it may well explain some.

Oddly enough, the percentage of homosexuality among male figure skaters seems like it would be similar to female softball/soccer/basketball players.

How has the actual answer not been posted yet? Here's the deal: most lesbians are substantially more masculine than their straight counterparts. With that comes the traits that make for better athletes- greater competiveness, more testosterone (which leads to strength when properly channeled in the weight room), less worry about getting sweaty/physical/dirty, etc.
It's not that hard to figure out.

Greg Louganis is one of my favorite athletes of all time. It is unbelievable how good he was. He came out of the closet after he retired.
I saw him on TV a couple of months ago. He has gone all fabulous and swishy.

The WNBA is a horrible business model. Their market is less than 3% of the population.
