Why does the DMV even have appointment times?

I set a DMV appointment for 1:50 and showed up with all my documents only to be put in a queue with everyone else and wait 41 minutes (and counting) beyond that time.

They are from the government and there to help.
Please take a number and they will help you in order.

Totally opposite experience for me- I had an appointment for 9:10am last Thursday to get my son's license. We arrive, check in, realize we forgot the envelope with the test results

Drove home, grabbed the envelope, drove back (about 45 minutes total), and we were still out and back to school by 10:30am.

because the workers are lazy government workers that get paid regardless of how quick they move through the queue.
If you're not there in the first hour, you'll be behind the rest of the day. They move in slow motion.

It's sort of like going to a doctor, i.e., the earlier your appointment, the less wait time you will have.
Like doctors, the DMV often gets backed up when the people in front of you take a lot longer that is typically allocated for an appointment.
I had an appointment about a month ago with the DMV at 8:15 a.m., the second slot available. I got there about 8:05. I was served a little after 8:15.

The want to cast an illusion of hope you’ll get out of there quickly. They feed on your disappointment

He originally had it in his backpack,

It's ok if you want to go get it and come back- your appointment is good until 3:30 today
That’s not how appointments work.

Always set this type of appointment for first thing in the morning.

It's nice you had an appointment. When I looked online for an appointment at the DMV, the next appointment was absurdly far out.
The DMV itself was a zoo. The employees had no patience and one of them I remember started going after some clueless college student. The employees made it abundantly clear that they were doing you a favor by helping you.

This is one advantage of living in a small town. In and out of DMV within 10 minutes.

Agreed- I was surprised when they said that. I guess they have a certain amount of appointments, and they serve those customers first no matter what.

Don’t have ability to make appointments here… or didn’t the last I went.
I usually go in and take a number, leave and go have a nice lunch, then come back and usually have about a 15 min or so wait.

There is a place in my neighborhood that does everything the DMV does. I walked in, got a new license with a new photo, paid, and walked out in 10 minutes.
All I walked in with was my license. Literally
