Why does USPS suck so bad?

Waited for a package for 2 weeks (came from overseas), finally got to my local facility and it sat there for 2 days before I got a notification this morning that it was being sent back to the sender. This was because the zip code was off by 1 digit, a typo.
Went to try to pick it off after work and the fricker was already gone. Oh, and there’s no way to intercept it either.
1. Why the frick can’t they take 10 seconds to verify the address in whatever system they use?
2. Even if it was so wrong that it couldn’t be verified, why cant they contact the person and at least give them a day to pick it up before sending back?
3. How many packages are they sending back a day? Imagine all the mail that gets sent with 1 wrong letter/number.
They’ve lost my packages and fricked up deliveries continuously, and the people working there are never any help. Absolutely worthless carrier.

It’s the government. They don’t do anything right other than spend money

So it's their fault you can't type a zipcode?
Posted on 9/8/23 at 5:37 pm to NorthTxLSU
They are terrible, but I can’t think of any other delivery service that’s much better

I may be the exception, but over time I have had many more issues with UPS than the USPS. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I never have a problem with USPS. Usually, they deliver my packages earlier than expected.
FedEx is the worst. Package will sit on their truck for days saying "Out for Delivery".
And it's not their fault that you or whoever sent it messed up on that end and put the wrong address on the package. And it's not their responsibility to figure out what was meant by the sender. It's their responsibility to make sure the package isn't delivered to the wrong person.
Pay more attention next time.

I ordered a scope on tax free from Simmons in north LA shipped to Sulphur, LA. FedEx somehow managed to get it to Memphis and now California and unable to locate it. I’m beyond pissed considering every package is scanned and should damn near dumb down your fricking job as a FedEx employee on where an item should end up.
I wish I had USPS

I know why
I’m sure you could figure it out

The problem is that it came from overseas. The French post office, for instance, wouldn't have any idea how many digits are in US zip codes. I presume you've seen some of the post codes from other countries and how comparatively complicated they are.
Did it go to the post office for your zip code? I'm curious how it could have with the missing digit.
I commiserate. My old, tiny arse USPS PO where I used to live was fine. My new address about six miles away uses a different post office/zip code. Why the hell it takes three and a half weeks to get local mail forwarded from my old address, I have no idea.

Yep, same. Maybe it’s the area y’all live in, but the postal folk have always been good where I live.

The drivers are contractors, not employees. Next time you see the truck, there's usually somewhere on the truck where it indicates who the actual operator of the truck is. Complain directly to the contractor.
UPS has generally been the least reliable and most frustrating (yes, even over USPS) for most of my life, in multiple locations. However, the driver on my old route busted his arse, I don't think he was ever not jogging. I watched that guy lose 40-50 pounds during COVID

The smaller the town, the better they usually are. A lot of the older employees are veterans.

It was my old zip code, which is 1 digit at the end different than my new one (moved 5 minutes away).
The smart asses saying “type the right zip code” are purposely being obtuse, my problem is the absurdity of it ending up where it needed to and being sent back immediately before I could even grab it

It didn't end up where it was supposed to though.
It ended up at the wrong Post Office with an address that doesn't exist in that zip code.
They did the right thing, you messed up.

While they may deliver late more often than UPS or FedEx, USPS always gets it there without charging bogus fees.
We get far more big-time screw-ups with UPS and FedEx.
UPS has returned packages as undeliverable, charged two-way shipping fees, and tacked on correction fees when customers typo their last name by a single letter.

They don't even spend money right.

The package may have been there longer than you thought. You can get inaccurate tracking data, particularly when packages are being transferred between carriers. For instance, some packages will be picked up by Fedex but delivered by USPS, it's called SmartPost. This means that I see a "delivered" date of Monday, but that means it was delivered to my local post office, and may not be delivered to me until Thursday.
It would seem a complete waste of money to return a package to sender that's overseas, but consider that the plane is flying whether your package is on it or not, so it doesn't move the needle much. Is that United flight carrying 1,100 pounds of mail to Brussels, or is it 1,115? Who cares?
I hope it wasn't time sensitive. Not that I get a lot of international mail, but I would always opt for DHL/FedEx over a European Post office to transfer it to the USPS. If it's not cost prohibitive, of course. Somehow, the junk electronic crap I get from China always gets delivered, and usually early, through USPS.

I messed up but I can’t agree with you they did they right thing.
It’s absurd that they can’t take 10 seconds to verify the address. I could pull up Apple maps and the destination will auto fill with the street name and address.
It’s also absurd that it was 10 minutes away from me for 2 days and I didn’t even get a chance to pick it up.
Argue with a wall
