Why is AMC’s movie theater parking lot on O’Neal Lane so large?

It nearly extends to the Millerville exit
Even in its heyday, did they come near to filling it up?

Yes they did, when it was the Rave...they had shuttles running

What a waste of money that was. Even when it first opened it was never 1/4 full. I don't think that many people would fit in the building.

That's a pretty big theater with a lot of screens and there were way more seats per screen when they built it than there are now. Remember that they renovated it after the flood and installed those big comfy motorized recliners that have a big footprint instead of the old school tightly packed theater seats they used to have. They drastically reduced their capacity in the remodel.
Ordinances require a business to provide a certain number of parking spots based on its capacity. It's a "you've gotta have X number of parking spots per Y number of seats" sort of thing. So, when they built it, they needed that many parking spots to satisfy what the ordinance required for the number of seats they had. The point is that a business is required to pay for and provide enough parking on its own dime so its customers don't overflow into the streets or other business's parking lots and become a nuisance/hazard.
The short answer is that they didn't just build a giant parking lot for shits and giggles and it is the size of lot that was required when it was built.

Exactly. I mean, what were they thinking? That lot is massive.

I remeber when I Am Legend premiered there. There was no parking left at all.

When it was one of the only theaters in town after it was first built, place was always packed.

I had to park halfway down once, and remembered thinking that every seat would have to be sold for every theater twice for the whole thing to be filled.

The first 5-6 years that place was open they would regularly use 85-95 percent of the parking on weekends. Traffic was so bad that they were trying to buy property behind it to put another exit that would feed to Harrells Ferry

I get that it was always packed, but take a really close look at it when you pass by it next time. It’s way too big of a lot.
It wasn’t the only show in town. You had Tinseltown and Siegen was still operating. Plus UA in Citiplace.

Maybe you missed my first post, when it was first built as the Rave, that parking lot was nearly full every Friday and Saturday night with shuttles running.

Your memory is bad. For the first few years "Rave" was open, the parking lot would fill on the weekend nights. They had shuttles that would run from the very back to the front driveway.

It's like he doesn't grasp this

Correct.

TTown and Citiplace were going downhill fast and the Rave was the spot for “more” peaceful movie watching.

It used to fill up all the time when it first opened up.....

When I was at LSU that was the only decent theatre. Perkins Rowe hadn't opened and citiplace was a shite whole.

Because that many spots were required by code based on its seating capacity when it opened.
The old Tinseltown and the theater by the mall had just as much parking, but it's not spread out so linearly, so it doesn't look as obnoxious.

All of those theaters were old, outdated and ghetto. Plus rave was the new and shiny thing and the only decent theater in that direction, and that coincided with the explosion of people in central/denham.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure rave had the first HD screens in BR.
