probably not, high tide probably pushes over the sand into the lake anyways which would put the sand back in place, im sure this gets done a good bit at that spot

From the comments

To those of you wondering about how this effects the ecosystem, they are doing this in the Waimea River in Hawaii. Every year, the high surf causes flooding that displaces animals, fish, people, and even plants. Annually, a group digs a trench like this one to ensure the safety of the environment.

The Waimea River empties into the Pacific already... they just dug a small trench at the mouth of the river to get a faster current.

Why wouldnt it be good? They dug like a 30 yard trench. If the river is that close to the ocean im sure there are plenty of times the tide or flow from the river makes cuts through the sand that flow into the ocean. Im sure that river is already brackish.

When heavy rains hit the North Shore, it has become a tradition that local surfers dig up the sand to connect the Waimea River to the shorebreak at Waimea Bay. The project creates a standing wave that was made famous in Endless Summer 2.

Came to post this too, I read an article somewhere on it talking about how most of the habitat survive in brackish water anyway.
When the flood waters recede the tide takes care of the trench they dug.

crazy how the little ditch they dug turned into a river ! Wonder how long that took?

Used to manually open the pass at Lake Powell. Yes, it is highly illegal.
