Would You Drive This? 1972 Citroën DS

In October of 1955, Citroën introduced the world to the DS at the Paris motor show. A record 80,000 deposits were placed for pre-orders over the next 3 days, making the DS the Tesla Model 3 of the 20th century.
The Citroën DS is powered by an air cooled flat six engine putting out between 65-85 horsepower, depending on the model year and trim level. You had a choice between a 3 speed manual or between a 4 speed auto or 4 speed manual gearbox in the DS. The car featured a hydropneumatic suspension that automatically leveled the suspension to account for luggage or extra passengers.
What makes the DS truly unique is the front-mid engine layout combined with front wheel drive. Most front-mid engined cars are sports cars (such as the C3-C7 Corvette or Jaguar F type roadster). That, combined with an iconic profile made the Citroen DS the quintessential French sedan of the 20th century.
The car remained popular for nearly 2 decades, with the model being phased out 20 years after its introduction in 1975. It was replaced by the more conventional Citroën CX
Frankly, I think the Citroën DS ranks up there with the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, 1958 Corvette C1, and 1961 Jaguar E-type as one of the most beautiful cars of the 1950s and 60s....but a lot of people find the DS to be too quirky and awkward looking.

Without a doubt.
They used those cars for filming horse racing due to the suspension being so smooth the cameras didn't bounce around while pacing the horses from the inside track.

That's the car Tony Montana refused to blow up.

They ride very nice. Numerous engineering features and oddities across the car, with both the wagon and convertible being unique designs as well. Would be an interesting car to have in a collection.

I remember seeing these all over France when I was there in the early 90s and remembering how much I thought it looked like one of these but without the handle coming out of the top:

how many of these "would you drive" threads are you going to litter the board with?

Unless he's breaking a rule, I imagine as many as he wants. I hope it's one more than it takes to make you soil your panties, hall monitor.

The later DS 19 prevented De Gaulle's assassination in 1962.

I think that's the car that Jane on The Mentalist drove. His was blue, I think. I always thought it was weird looking, but I'd drive it. I'd call it quirky.

That's the car the Clark Griswold drove in European Vacation... Pig in a Poke Winner!

A pristine DS is wonderful eye candy but terrible to have to try to live with.
I'd much rather Pagoda- (a '68 MB 280 SL pictured here)

That's the first thing I thought of as well. Grace Van Pelt was fun to watch.

I love the DS!
The French used to build cool cars back in the day. All they do now is build cheap ones unfortunately because their customers are so poor.

Friend from high school had one. It previously belonged to her dad. I graduated in ‘83.

Most definitely. Those are some off the coolest, most unique cars ever produced.
They ride like nothing else.
