I'm paying for Cox internet in my home and with that comes Cox basic cable. Without a box i had no way to take advantage of those channels. I did not want to pay Cox anymore than i had to so until now i've just used over the air and KODI.
Just now finding out about t this

One of the most common misconceptions about cable is that you have to use your cable provider's equipment in order for it to work. You don't. According to the FCC's website, for broadband providers like Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner, Charter, Cox and the over 800 local cable companies around the country, it's your right to purchase your own cable box and/or modem, install a cablecard on your own volition and, as a result of these actions, the cable company cannot charge you a penny more for choosing to not use their hardware.

"It's a multi-billion dollar business, and we're like a virus to them. They don't want us to grow. They'll do anything and everything they possibly can to stop you from buying your own box. That's the biggest problem." We've reached out to Comcast regarding Bianchini's comments, but the company has not responded as of this writing. After my discussion with Bianchini only one question remained: If this is such a good deal, why don't more people do this? "They don't know. Most people just aren't aware of it." And knowing, as they say, is half the battle.

It was nice before you needed the box. Might look into getting one.

When I was still in my house in BR (college), I bought my own satellite and DVRs. Whenever I called DirecTV to have them activated, I told gave my parents' account information and told them it was an additional DVR box for the house. Told them we just installed a Mother-in-Law suite. I was able to activate the box and they only charged the additional $10 or so a month for an additional box, rather than for an entirely new account.

Samsung sm530cf is fairly easy to acquire, has decent streaming support, but it's still finicky at best and no longer in production.

If you have Cox Communications in Baton Rouge, you can buy your own box but it won't do you any good if you don't have the software which unscrambles the signal from Cox. Cox won't provide that software.....yet.
The FCC voted a couple of months ago (I notice your link is dated 2015) that cable companies will have to provide the software to unscramble the signal soon but that has not gone into effect yet.

Don't worry, I went to confession and told a priest. A few hail marys and I'm good with Jesus. If he's not judging me for it, neither should you.

Cox charges $1.99/month per card, but it is still cheaper than renting boxes over the long run, you can get a basic cable card compatible box with remote from Walmart for 25 bucks.

The box is $3 a month to rent. Not much of a savings to buy your own.

UVerse is like $10 per box a month.

There seems to be a Catch-22 here. If you only subscribe to internet service, why would Cox rent you a box or a card without also charging you for TV?

I think it depends on the box and whatnot. DVR services and things like that will cost more than the basic box that Cox uses to replace those that used to just go straight to the TV.

I only have preferred internet service.

Yeah I'm talking about the basic Cox box that you need to get cable now. Its free for the first 12 months then $3 a month after that. It would take 2 years for the $25 box from walmart to pay for itself.
