Those aren't "mosquito hawks" no matter what someone might call them. The swarms that around now are "crane flies". They don't eat mosquitoes. They are harmless....Unfortunately to mosquitoes also.

I’ve never seen crane flies like this before.
And yes, our cat loves them

Sorry CootKilla, but that is a picture of a dragonfly. A mosquito hawk is much smaller.

You have to treat your lawn for the grubs.

LSU Ag center posted about this yesterday. Crane Flies. They don't feed and only live long enough to reproduce.
quote:
Every spring in Louisiana, there is an emergence of crane fly adults. Adults are short-lived, do not feed and live only long enough to mate and deposit eggs, typically not more than a week.
A common name for this species, "mosquito hawk", refers to the mistaken belief that adult crane flies prey on mosquitoes. In fact, they do not feed at all.
Larvae of crane flies are important in nutrient recycling of organic matter in both terrestrial and aquatic systems. The slow-flying, clumsy adults are an important forage base for birds, lizards and other insectivorous animals, including predatory insects and spiders.
No control is recommended for crane flies. Accidental entry into homes can be prevented by turning off lights and sealing points of entry, such as loose-fitting doors.

Imagine being created just to be eaten by everything else lol

The old folks referred to them as “blind mosquitoes?”
Posted on 3/4/24 at 4:26 pm to Koolazzkat
Yeah, I always thought they were male mosquitos.

I have always heard them referred to as "crane flies" with "mosquito hawks" and "dragon flies" being the same thing with two names.

I fixed that.
