Well, this is the time of year I start looking. My earliest sighting was Feb 1 in Avoyelles. Getting my house cleaned out this weekend. Looking like Houston has a sighting and a lot to the east. Scout arrival study link.

I blocked the entrance holes for the first time this year. Trying to keep the sparrows from setting up shop. went out today and opened the house back up. May be early for me as it seems I do not get my first arrival until late in Feb.

I've been working on them. They are getting bait shy though.

Thanks for the reminder. There is a sighting in Lafayette and one in Mandeville on eBird. And several in Tallahasse, and lots in the Florida peninsula. They are on their way.

I put mine on a pole in shallow water that connects two lakes. It was the best way to get away from trees and also keeps predators from the base of the pole. It's worked out really well with lots of birds last year. But it's going to be cold wading out to clean it.

BTW - this is the Purple Martin migration time lapse graphic based on eBird data. They winter down in the Amazon. Migration really is mostly across the Gulf from the Yucatan, not as much coming up Florida as I thought. I enjoy seeing the one for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds as well. That's still more than a month away.

Most, if not all, of the older early arrival birds died in the freeze last year so basically we're waiting on the younger birds that came after that.

It looked like my group took a big hit.

Yes, but my house was not even close to full. I may have had three pairs when I normally have almost full capacity.

Last year was the earliest for me. I think it was February 1st. Usually it's always around 2/14 give or take a day.

How do you protect them from snakes?

In my experience, the snakes you have to worry about aren't coming from water.

I have yet to see a snake in the lakes and have just assumed that water snakes are going to have a hard time going up a 15 foot metal pole. So far it's worked out well. Maybe the small gators I get eat the snakes.

I bought a house I haven’t put up yet, I’d better get to it. Last year the house down the canal had so many spilling over they kept trying to get in my basketball goal. They were convinced it was supposed to be a house, it was funny to watch
