Looking to get my son a 22LR. Don't have one myself, so would be interested in getting something decent, or something that can be made decent for target shooting. I was going to get a 10/22 and know there are tons of options available for it.

Also toying with the idea of a bolt action rifle with a Remington 700 footprint. That would let me swap to the same trigger I have on my rifle to use as a trainer. However, the entry level for a bolt action of that type seems to be twice as much as the 10/22. And there are plenty of great upgrades to make over time to make it a really good target rifle.

I have the Ruger American in a .22lr. It’s a sweet little gun. I put a Dead Air Mask on it and it’s as quiet as a staple gun.

10/22. tons of accessories available. Mine is one of my favorite guns. The beak down model is pretty neat becasue you can store it in a backpack for camping, etc.

S&W M&P 15-22

a great little gun that eats anything.

That said, a 10/22 is a staple for a reason. I have 3 (One I haven't finished building). Everyone needs a 10/22.
Don't discount the Marlin 60b. It's a great little gun as well.

for bolt, there are so many good ones. I have a Ruger Precision .22. I wanted one with a threaded barrel to fit my silencer. With subs, it's quieter than a pellet gun. All you hear is the hammer hitting the rim.

I'd love to find a good CZ or a Bergera.

I have a Savage in .17 hmr. It's a tack driver but I hate carrying the gun. The magazine release sucks.

I just love a .22lr. All of them. Semi pistols, revolvers, bolt action semi, semi rifles. I have some of all.

ETA the marlin 60b

One more edit. I do not have a lever action. I will at some point. My brother had a Winchester and I loved that gun. It's my nephews now.

Every young person should start with a single shot.
Learning to make that first shot count is critical in hunting and "Spray-And-Pray" is worthless in both hunting and target shooting.
Once the basic restraint and concentration is achieved and firmly ingrained, then a semi-automatic like the 10-22 is a great tool.

Ruger 10/22 cannot be beat IMO. Dad has had one for as long as I can remember (atleast 35 years) and that gun cannot be stopped. It's probably seen more abuse/time in the woods clearing trails, checking hog traps and just being the all around "beater camp gun" and It's still chugging along.

Bolt action is great as a learning gun.

I'm a bigger fan of the Marlin model 60 than the 10/22.

ETA: that said, my dad's first gun to me was an Ithaca model 49 single shot. Still my favorite gun by far.

I have both the Marlin Mod 60 and the 10/22

Both great guns, but it's kind of a pain in the arse to load that little 10 round rotary mag on the 10/22. I do have some 25 and 50 round mags for it, but don't really like walking around the woods with them hanging out.

That said, I agree that every kid should have one.

I bought the Savage Rascal single shot .22 for my boys a year or so ago. My oldest just turned 8 yesterday, and I think I'll start looking into getting him a 10/22.

I have a Browning .22 semi from when I was a kid that I still love as well.

My takedown 1022 is not terribly accurate past 50yds. Its OK but I think takedown is over hyped. I should have gone Charger 1022. The takedown is still very fun.

I got a Ruger American 22 with iron sites and put a rugged occulus on it. It takes Ruger 10/22 mags. I freaking love it. It came with a different cheek plate if I ever put a scope on it. It’s my favorite gun at the moment. It’s still a little big for my 6 year. He does love shooting it out of my tripod though. I

I also got a Ruger charger with 8” barrel and added an adjustable stock. It’s fun suppressed as well.

I looked hard at the cz’s. They were nice. I’m hard on my stuff and couldn’t justify beating up that nice of a rifle. Also got the 2 Ruger’s for close to what the CZ would have cost.

another great option for a kid is the Henry AR7 survival rifle. Super light, pretty accurate and the barrel and receiver stow inside the buttstock so you can stick it in a pack or bag easily

Then when he/she outgrows it it becomes dad’s bug out rifle

My dad got my son one of those for Christmas when has was 7 or 8. My son unwrapped it and said "cool, it's the butt of a gun"

He had no idea the other parts were in there.

I agree cgrand, it's an accurate little rifle with the open sights on it.

I love my 77/22 and have a lot of fond memories of squirrel hunting w/ it. Having said that, it would not be my recommendation for a learner 22LR. Since the 77/22 was discontinued some years ago, buying one on the used market would be expensive. I like the 10/22 as well, but for a young kid, I'd suggest starting w/ something like a bolt action, single action or lever action instead of a semi-auto, Savage bolt actions a good history for accuracy and are relatively inexpensive. OTOH, Savages are also known to frequently have problems w/ extraction and ejection as well as cheap magazines. There are quality replacement magazines now available. For a young kid who's learning, I prefer a synthetic stock instead of a pretty wood stock. I've got a Howa bolt that's a little more expensive than a Savage, but not quite as accurate as my Savage. The Howa also has a history of magazine problems. Tikka and CZ make really nice and accurate bolt 22's although the price jumps considerably. My Tikka is the most accurate 22 I own. It's good of you to introduce your kid to shooting. Keep us updated.
