.308 vs 6.5 prc

Aside from long distance shooting, would there be any reason to swap from a .308 to a prc ?

Probably more reasons not to switch, but one benefit to the PRC could be better sectional density and penetration with the right bullets. Not that it would change any outcomes on hogs, whitetail, or elk within a few hundred yards.
270Win offers the same performance as both of those cartridges. Pick the one you like the most or pick the one that your pappy already reloads.

IMO no compelling reason large enough to counter the fact that 308 is much more readily available and at a much less cost. YMMV

Leave those unproven pop guns like .270 and .308 alone. Creedmore baw, guaranteed to drop anything short of a Cape buffalo inside 1800 yards.

And if you handload, .30 cal bullets have a huge variety in weights and types.

What type of hunting are going to be doing?
6.5 prc ammo is hard to find. Couldn’t get any last summer nor brass.
If your hunting in the south where most all shots are 200 yards and in don’t change. Most PRC factory ammo will be made for longer range applications and the bullets won’t perform well (Hornady ELD-x).
.308 is probably the best cartridge for deer hunting in the south.

Like others mentioned, No clear reason to switch. .308 can handle any animal in North America with proper shot placement. My biggest reason for sticking to it is the ability to get ammo. During the hard times of finding ammo, .308 was always the single most available round.

I’m all in on the .308. I mainly whitetail hunt but usually make one mule deer hunt somewhere every year. Going to New Mexico this year. Like the idea of the .308 in case I get to go elk hunting one day. I’m one of the people that jumped on the creedmore bandwagon a few years ago and hated it, I’ve just been hearing good things about the prc. The .308 is more than enough for what I do.

#1 it’s fun to buy new guns/new cartridges
#2 there never had to be a reason to buy a new gun
#3 don’t let anyone convince you to not buy a new gun or cartridge if you want one.
At 350yd and less you are not shortchanging yourself with the 308. As others have said shorterm finding 6.5prc ammo is difficult and they are expensive compared to the same 308.
Long term you run the risk of it being a extinct cartridge (go do a search for 243wsm ) it can happen.

If you’re making a mule deer hunt every year, it might be worth going with the PRC. A serious hunter needs two big game rifles ready to go at all times. Go ahead and buy it.

The only good reason would be if you just want another gun. That's a good enough reason.

Not really, but its really really important past 800 yards. Everyone knows you cant shoot 308 past 800.

Any wsm cartridge. The 6.8 Western, prc. These are fads. I'm building a custom 7mm rem mag and my gunsmith wanted me to go to 7mm prc because of the belt. Nope. I handload and the PRC has no components on the shelves.

to kill a deer, no.
for the enjoyment of a new gun, yes.
