I’ve got a .223 and am thinking about a 9mm because of the access to ammo.
Any thoughts? Shy away?

Access to .223/5.56 isn't a problem. I have both, love a "AR9", fun and cheap to shoot.

I ordered a CMMG Guard 9mm a couple weeks ago. I mainly bought it for shooting competitively, competitively used lightly
, in steel challenge/USPSA type shooting.
I have shot a couple matches with guys shooting PCC, Pistol Caliber Carbines, and it looks like a blast. I immediately started looking for a PCC to start shooting in that category after one match.
I should get my carbine in a week or two. I can report back after I receive my carbine.

I love pistol caliber carbines. They are a blast to shoot. My favorite reason over the cost of ammo is you can shoot steel close. If you are getting one I would recommend getting a glock mag compatible one. If you have a glock you can use the same mags. If you don't have a glock then get a glock.

People who have the High point 9mm carbine, say it's fun and cheap.
but damn,it's a high point, and IMO ugly as hell.

I shot one made by Ruger years ago. A buddy of mine had the 9mm Carbine, and it also worked with his P Series 9mm Magazines. I looked all over for one, but they weren't making any at the time, and I couldn't find a used one.

Ruger recently began production of a 9mm PCC which can use Ruger or Glock magazines. It looks like production has not yet caught up with demand so either be patient or place an order with your LGS.

They are really fun if you put a 4 inch barrel on them and shoot with a suppressor. I ahve a CMMG MK9 SBR and shoot 147 grn out of mine and its stupid quiet. If you go that route make sure you get a Spikes 9mm STx-9x buffer. I had reliability issues out of mine and the Spikes fixed it.

9MM carbines are extra fun; i have an UZI model B that i shoot more than any other firearm i own
if you just want an AR platform i'm sure they are fine, but there are many 9MM carbines out there

So true! After wanting one for a few years, I bought a High Point 9mm carbine and a Ruger 556 AR 15 a few days after the Parkland, FL shooting. I've run 100 or so rounds through the HP w/o any problems. I really wish they made it w/ a folding stock. My old eyes don't shoot open sights very well so I put an inexpensive Bushnell red dot on it. I've enjoyed playing w/ it so far.
I have been told, only to shoot round nose ammo through them. Have you heard the same?

Depends on the gun. Some do fine, others do not.
There are barrels with feed ramps built into them. Helps with the feeding.
Over the past two or three years PCC's (Pistol Caliber Carbines) have become super popular in several competitions. Steel Challenge, USPSA, 3 gun and even (gasp!) IDPA. Because of the popularity, there are new models, parts and upgrades hitting the market every day. Beware tho, some of these models are not totally interchangeable with AR parts. They are a hoot to shoot, super fast and when made right with quality parts, run like a scalded dog.

I know nothing about these but the couple of times I've seen one on La Sportsman, I've wondered why I never hear people talk about them/have one.

Thank you all for the help/advice

No, I haven't. OTOH, i didn't really research the Hi Point that much. I've shot only FMJ's in mine so far...to cheap to shoot HPs!
