A beginners guide to public duck hunting

I'm new to this duck hunting thing, and have never stepped foot on public land to duck hunt. I'm in baton rouge and lpoking for areas in south east LA to do some duck hunting. I also have a dog that I would like to bring, and do have access to a boat, but working on getting a small motor. What will I need at what places, and where would be ideal for my situation?

Burnt wine cork, good waders, Wingmaster 870, scout any WMA, 6 doz G&H decoys, case of steel shot #2 or #4, keep your head down, don't call ducks.
That should get you started.

That should get you started.

Thanks. Aren't there restrictions on gas powered motors on some of the WMAs?

I believe so, there is plenty of information on the LDWF website.

Yes, in most. https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/ will give you the info on the rules/regs of each area.
I would get the info on the Sherbourne WMA hunt since it's not that far from BR. Used to be something like every Wed, Thurs, and Friday would be duck hunts on the South Farm. Call the WMA area office to find out specifics.
ETA: as for gear...waders, shotgun, a few calls, and a small waterproof (drybox) case, and a few dozen decoys for big ducks. Wood ducks usually don't decoy in narrow bayous, so if you find some place that holds woodies, dont worry about decoys. Get a long piece of bamboo to get the ducks from the bayou after you shoot them. 3 is 1 man limit

I am new myself but I am going to try Big Branch this weekend. My buddy went last weekend but said he did not even have a chance to shoot his gun. When he was leaving, he was asking people how they did because he heard gun shots and their response was, "we were just shooting to shoot."

If you have a boat get a gps and go learn biloxi wma. If you put in time scouting it, you can find birds.

- go with someone who has experience
- preperation (scouting) is key
- use decoys but leave the call home
- conceal yourself totally, can not stress this enough

They have a couple WMA's in Avoyelles. I could point you in the right direction if you so desire.

Unless it sits and doesnt move/bark when you tell it to sit/stay then DO NOT bring it.

Dogs don't bother ducks. Can't tell you how many ducks I've shot while my dog is in mid retrieve.

Is this friendly advice or has the state passed a new law? I wish it was a law. Years ago in Russel-Sage some douche had a dog named "sprite" and he yelled at that POS from just before sunrise until about 10:00. It got so bad we started blowing a whistle and yelling SPRITE just to see if we could help. I think he finally left out of being emberassed. When hunters not in your group start screaming at your dog it is time to GTFO!

I would be willing to bet that more ducks flare off than decoy in when a dog is moving around. I've had ducks come into the decoys when I was out in a boat picking up birds, doesn't mean that its the best idea. Its also annoying as shite when somebody brings a dog that wont keep still in the blind.

IMO a dog swimming in the decoys is not near as big of a deal as a dog cutting back flips in what is supposed to be just a clump of bushes/trees/grass. A dog acting up in the blind is going to draw attention to the blind. When they start inspecting the blind it is over.
