Alpaca vs Merino Wool

I’m a big fan of merino wool, but I’ve been getting ads for alpaca lately. Anyone use it for layering? What do you think of it?
A simple google search came up with “ When compared to merino wool, alpaca is softer, stronger, warmer, and retains less water.”

Whatever keeps my feet from sweating when it is cold gets my vote.
Thinner boots with less insulation = feet cold early
Thicker insulation = feet cold later when the sweat
Tootsies freeze when my feet sweat in the stand.
Merino seems to do okay, so I am interested in these comments.

One of my podnuhs recently bought some of the willow ace alpaca socks recently. He said they're comfy but they don't seem like they'll hold up well compared to darn tough

That’s the con with alpaca, it’s not as durable as merino. Did a pretty deep dive into the different wool types after moving to Minnesota
ETA: Annnnd it’s snowing this morning. In October.

I don’t have any alpaca shirts but I have a bunch of merino socks and I recently got a few pairs of hollow alpaca socks. It seems like they have similar odor control but don’t hold as much moisture. I like them. Thlete has some alpaca shirts I’ve considered trying, I have way too many base layer/long john type clothes.

The alpaca socks feel great. I’ll let you know how they hold up.

Merino wool advocate here wore is head to toe on my Everest base camp trek,,,,,temps 70 to -15 over 3 weeks. Zero complaints,,,,,BTW, I trained hard core for a year in 3 pair of darn tough socks, and I’m still wearing them daily since I returned a year ago.

I had toe surgery shortly before a late November trip to Maine. Had to wear sandals the whole time. There was snow on the ground and the Alpaca socks were a godsend.
I don't know how well they hold up because I only wear them when it is really cold, but they are soft and warm. Just don't run them through the dryer.

400g insulated boots + darn tough socks.
Also learned last year not to wear my jacket walking to the stand on cold mornings. I make sure I have a moisture wicking shirt on my first layer and then put the jacket on at the stand. Keeps me from sweating and then freezing.

I like bringing a fleece blanket with me. Like the cheap ones in the bins at Walmart.
When I get to the stand and sit I unzip my coveralls and fold and wrap it around my core then zip up. If my core is warm my feet usually stay warmer.
Plus if I need a towel or something later I can use that and just wash it. They are cheap and I have several of them with the kids.
