American Alligators - how high can they jump?

I saw something today. Not sure of what the frick I saw.
Seems gators can get up off the bank pretty high on a panicked blast to the water. Perhaps I'm going crazy and seeing shite. Looked like that big bastard got his head up to 3-4' above the water from the bank.
Maybe it was sunstroke.

So you're telling me that a 12ft gator can just 6 ft in the air?

I've seen a 5' alligator ease (not jump) two feet out the water to get a chicken leg.
Take it FWIW.

I used to feed mine bream I'd stick on a cane pole, and watching them jump to get em was kind of fun to watch. I'd say 4-5 ft, as mine were about 9 ft max. Once they get going, they really get a good tail push, so wouldn't doubt higher in bigger gators.

This 9+ footer was on land, going to the water. On the way he jumped over a smaller gator. From my vantage point he seemed to be 3-4' in the air prior to hitting the water.
Like he was shot out of a damn canon!

I saw an alligator jump at Lake Martin. It looked like at least half of it was out of the water. Scared the you know what out of me! I thought it had something to do with mating, but don't really know.
(Sorry to intrude on y'all's board, I was just browsing the boards.)

Alligators are incredibly strong.
If you don't believe it, try to cut a dead one's tail. It's all you can do the hold on to the damn thing to poke a hole in it while it's dead. A live one is a powerful SOB
That said, I doubt they can jump that high on land. Their power is in their tail and jaw. Their legs are not made for anything but dragging their big asses across the mud.

I believe it. I've never seen one jump on land though. My only experience with alligators is ones with hooks in their guts.

Yeah, I've raised them for years, and can't say as I've seen them jump on dry land. Not saying they can't, just can't confirm.

I have seen them rocket out of the water completely. I was in oak river in Delacroix and one came completely out of the water to grab a white bird off a branch. Was absolutely astonished. If they wanted to they could jump into a boat (from the water).
