Anyone duck hunt in Tensas NWR?

Thinking of going up for a week sometime from mid Dec to mid Jan to try and find some mallards. Would be going up blind since I have never been there, thinking of just cruising the river looking for flooded areas and back waters holding birds. Any recommendations or info on the area?
TIA

Cruising Miss river or Tensas river? Ive hunted tensas a lot and there's birds no doubt. When there's lots of water (like 2 yrs ago), they don't move around as much though. Last year on new years there was a raft of 1000s of everything on lake st Joseph in newellton

Tensas river
Its one of the few public spots that you dont here that its crazy packed and can hold good numbers of birds.

I grew up living close to and on that lake, was good fishing and lots of ducks on what we called the lower end, that was 45 years ago though

That's because it's positioned in a sparsely populated part of the state, and the abundance of public land much closer to the few bigger towns in the area. Not to mention that the only people you hear about traveling up there from any distance are deer hunters.
If you are going for a week I'd go in early January. My experience up in that part of the world is the later, the better. Not to mention you will typically have more water later in the year. Things seem to calm down on public in this state after Christmas holidays wrap up.
I'm sure some of the OB posters from up that way would have some good advice.

If there's birds in the general area, then you'll see them there for sure. I was in a lease off the Tensas and we had good days, great days, and piss poor days!

Water less than knee deep in oaks without palmetto
It can be hard to find but it's there

I’ve been the last few years. Went blind both times. Talk to the deer hunters, they can usually point you in right direction.

Can you get to the back Waters and flooded areas from the river? I could be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that parts of the river are levied in the NWR.

Not levees, just steep banks in places.
Flooded oak flats can be really great. It's hit or miss because it's such a large area. Thousands of acres will have a lot of water in Jan.

So is running the river a realistic way to find and hunt ducks or are the banks too steep to take the boat and get to the flooded areas? The other thing is I have a larger boat, 17 foot with the 60.

Bout to make a trip up there after Christmas to deer hunt, wanted to sneak in a couple duck hunts too. Can we talk more on specific spots, because it's my first time going up that way.

Check the regs, I think it’s closed on certain days of the week.

Can only hunt Tues, Thurs, Saturday, and Sunday till noon. We use to kill a bunch of mallards but over the past few years it’s been bad. I would not make the trip for duck hunting. You would have much better luck in Russell Sage or Darbone Wildlife Refuge.

There are very few ducks in tensas parish right now
Once we get a good 3 to 4 night freeze in a row, ducks show up. They will get right off the river on those mornings

I really wouldn't waste my time with those either, especially D'Arbonne. The woods at Sage are hardly even flooded and there is zero water on D'Arbonne cause the river is pretty low right now.
I know Wham and the old Ouachita WMA which both are now technically Sage too were killing some ducks during first split. That new Bosco tract is probably where I would check out as well.

Low water is awesome. Keeps mudmotors out and gives advantage to walkers. Hope we stay dry til end of season

The coonass exodus from the gun hunt yesterday was quite impressive. I passed no less than 200 fema trailers and 4,000 wheelers headed south thru Newellton. The amount of shite they can pack on a 16’ trailer is mind boggling
