Anyone ever caught a fish in Glacier National Park?

I've never taken a rod/reel into the park, because I've heard the fishing is lame (H2O too cold bc glacial).

But I bought a little ultralight "pen" (folds up to the size of an over-sized pen) rod w/ little spinning reel that can supposedly handle up to 4lb catch (as if that matters), for my 14-day backcountry trip.

I've seen decent trout in a couple isolated lakes, and we're going past the best fishing spots in the park, according to what i've read. (hiking from E. Glacier to Canadian border customs).

Any advice on spots/lures? We're there Aug 16-27. My bro caught a nice brown trout on a simple little spoon in nearby Whitefish lake (@ mouth of river running into it) last year.

ETA: hmmm dunno if worth $12 bucks + shipping.
LINK

Just found it for $5.00. I'll let you know how this turns out.

I went to that exact spot with a telescoping fishing pole last summer at that same time. We went to get our backcountry permits and the ranger there told us that the far side of Glenn's Lake had good fishing, so we hiked there. We didn't catch anything, but we also didn't take it very seriously at all and didn't hardly try. But take that info the ranger gave us fwiw. The rangers have books there at the ranger station that tell you what kind of fish each lake has and where the best places to catch them are. You will want to try to get a backcountry permit for your campsite a few days in advance so you can actually go where you want to.

We caught some white fish while floating down the middle fork of the Flathead.

That's about all I got...

Never fished in the park.

We did fish the Middle Fork like Salmon but we caught probably 50 fish of cutthroat and rainbows.

That doesn't include the whitefish I caught while waiting on lunch. Probably caught 30 or 40 in 30 minutes.

which sites did you stay in?

ETA: we are doing it in two legs--we'll have two nights to go wherever during the "break". may hike to Otokomi Lake--that's where i saw a bunch of fish.

Here's our already-permitted itinerary:
Red Eagle Lake, Head CG.
Atlantic Creek CG.
Oldman Lake CG.

2 nights of whatever, then...

Granite Park CG.
Fifty Mountain CG.
Stoney Indian Lake CG.
Glenns Lake Head CG.
Cosley Lake CG.
Gable Creek CG.

We only stayed one night there. We stayed at the exact same camping area that you are planning on going to, Glenns Lake Head (where the good fishing supposedly is). We were planning on hiking to Helen Lake the next night, but after 14 miles to Glenns Lake with full packs, we didn't feel like going another 13 miles to a different lake the next day, then 15 miles back to the car the day after that. We just ended up doing a few day hikes on the other days we were there, then went off to Yellowstone.

Some pictures from the hike to Glenns Lake...

The valley you will hike through past Gable Creek CG

Belly River

I believe this is Cosley Lake if I remember right

The place we camped at Glenns Lake

Either Cosley or Glenns

There will be a little side trail in between Cosley and Gable Creek that takes to to this waterfall area.

It's absolutely amazing there, you will love it. Are you ending your trip at the parking lot right by Canadian customs?

yup re customs. great pics! i love glacier. i have a hard time going other places, but i am going to branch out. i did a 4-day trip in the NW corner--Hole in the Wall CG was amazing. I'll post some pics soon. I've done a few other 1 nighters and day hikes too.

I live in Missoula when I can--used to be there full-time--trying to get back to that. kept house there in the Rattlesnake.

Nothing like it.
