Anyone ever convert a portable generator to natural gas?

Was toying with the idea. I have a NG hook up on my house and thought converting one of my portable generators would save on gasoline consumption during a hurricane. Any thoughts? If you have done it, what did you use?

Talk to a master plumber about a safe and legal way to do it. Kits are available for converting some gas generators but not all.

It's possible but complicated to do properly without a kit

I did it about a month ago on an 8kw generac. Used the US carb snorkel kit. Easy to install on generator, and easy to tap into gas meter. It runs as good or better on natural gas vs gasoline. I'm happy with it, and even happier about not having to stockpile or go out in search of gasoline in an emergency power situation. Also, I've been told that since ng runs so clean that you don't have to worry about the carb gumming up.

Natural gas is a much cleaner fuel than gasoline. Carbs don't gum up because it isn't liquid.

Maybe a little quieter, but not much. Also, the kit I installed is a tri-fuel kit that can run gasoline, ng, or propane. After I installed it, I ran a little gasoline through it to make sure it would work. Ran fine. After I burned the gasoline I hooked it up to ng and it ran even better. Haven't tried propane. The uscarb snorkel kit was around $185.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, my dad "african engineered" a large portable welding machine into a power generator and somehow hooked it up to run off our natural gas line. It worked.

Don't recall the exact kit but converted my 17.5 kW generac to NG and hooked up the transfer switch. Anchored it down and built a shelter for it. Power goes out, BAM! Everything is back on. I don't miss going out in the storm to fill up the fuel tank.

Yes my Dad did it to his house a few years ago....
I'm heading there later today so I'll take a look at it and ask my Dad about it and all that.

is your dad's generator tied in upstream of the gas meter...if so, you probably should take it down...

absolutely a good idea...lets you avoid the inevitable rush on gasoline stations before storms and also the trouble that stations have in pumping when the power is out for a period of time...
better check with your gas service provider as soon as you know required pressure and volume to see if they need to change out the meter/regulator....

I am in the process of converting a 13 HP Honda generator to natural gas. The engine will run hotter on natural gas and I was told by Honda that you should run it about 80% load and change the oil more often (about every 30-40 hours) or you might damage the engine. Also run top grade HD oil in the proper weight.
