Every year, for the last 5 or so, my hands start shedding skin once I start fishing. It doesn't happen with freshwater, just saltwater. My hands feel a little swollen and then they start to form air blisters that just start peeling. There is no pain associated with it, just aggregation.

Looking it up, it seems like it's called Keratolysis Exfoliativa and it's not uncommon.

Anyone here have the same issues? Does anything work to get rid of it?

my little brother used to get it bad. IDK what changed though. Any time we would go shrimping with my dad his hands would peel for a week or two after. He hasn't mentioned getting it in years and he still fishes saltwater

I've had it twice on the soles of my feet. The skin came off the bottoms of both feet in one big piece. Mine wasn't really red or tender after it peeled. I always assumed it was from my feet sweating in shoes on the boat all day.

Have you tried wearing gloves when you handle fish?

No. I don't think it's fish though. There are lots of times I go and don't handle many fish or won't catch much and it still happens.

I am pretty sure it's the salt water, or something in the salt water. I used to think it was from live shrimp, but even if I don't use it, I'll still peel.

I don't know if I could wear gloves all day on the water.

Honestly that would probably make it worse. I’ve never heard of this but am intrigued now

It's pretty strange, for sure. And it started happening randomly.

Like I said, it doesn't hurt and it isn't tender, just an annoyance.

Holy hell. I've wondered what this was for years, but didn't care enough to really investigate. It happens to me every time I handle a lot of fresh (not cooked) Shrimp. We eat a lot at home and I do boils for family every year. I always pop the heads off before and I had to start wearing gloves to do it.

I don't get it much when just fishing (only a slight version of it, it seems), but heading/peeling shrimp and my hands are a wreck for weeks.

I get it about twice a year. No clue as to what the triggering factor is since I don't fish, and don't live near the ocean.

I've had that for years on my left hand but I work out a lot and wash my hands a lot. I don't moisturize or anything like I should.

I have heard that before.

I have tried creams and moisturizers in an effort to keep it at bay, but it just results in softer peeling hands. I hate using that stuff so it's definitely not worth it.
