I'll sometimes will carry my infidel and microtech.
But do not go to Missouri with them. They any spring assisted is illegal there. Or at least it was 10yrs ago.
I had a Kershaw Chive taken from me at the Arch in St Louis.

Laws changed in 2012 and later. Now you can carry an auto knife as long as you aren't violating applicable Fed law. Think the only real restriction they have is blade length being 4" and less.

A friend of mine gave my son a Gerber automatic knife and it's a bad mf'er.

Gerber steel hold an edge better than it used to? I quit buying them 20something years ago because I was constantly having to sharpen them.

Not sure, I haven't had to sharpen it yet. He mainly only carries it in case he has to stab a hog.

I bought a cheap OTF at a gun show here a few years ago. After researching the regs when I got home, I found out that's where it needs to stay. If I recall there are exceptions for collectors.

Not really. They mostly use 420HC and some of there higher models use 154CM or so but they must have junk heat treatment now. I have two folding Applegates and the newer, larger one was junk from the get-go. The mini I picked up in Germany in 2004 is a great knife though. Wouldn't buy a Gerber for more that a beater.

When in doubt, whip it out.
If you need a spring assisted knife, by all means carry one. Anything goes when it comes to self defense. (That’s my motto)

Who sells spring assisted knives in NOLA?

Yes spring assisted and autos are legal in Louisiana. Other than the novelty of having an out the front auto I have found no use for them. In my opinion spring assist opening is simply a cheap way to make a flipper. A well made non assisted flipper with a proper detent is far superior.

Pretty much why I carry a Benchmade Axis-lock folder. No slower than an auto and much easier to one-hand close. SOG's Arc-lock Pentagon folder was about the only knife I've owned that was smoother.

Will you sue them if you prick your finger? I once knew a guy who cut his finger on a spring assisted blade and it caused pain in his neck and back.
