Was reading up on it and think I want to take the yak out there this weekend to check it out. I read that you have to get a refuge pass from some little shed. Anyone shed light on this? Where exactly is the shed? If i get there at 6am, I'm assuming they'll be open? Does it cost anything?

I think it's along 90 on the left hand side.......not sure of the exact location. Fooled around the last couple of years with some crawfish nets in there. Would be interested to see how the fishing is. Not sure I would eat any fish from there since it's pretty close to that landfill.

Won't eat the fish, but will dine on crawfish from same location?

Not all that keen on doing that either. Last year we went it was still too cold, so we didn't have to worry about doing any eating, and the previous year we only caught about half a sack.

That's what gets me about people eating these ditch crawfish around these plants in cancer alley. People were stacked up near Dow St. Charles yesterday.

The boat launch is about a mile or so from the levee on the Irish Bayou side.

I would note that the area is a bit sketchy and is frequently used by criminals to drop off and burn stolen cars. So take that in consideration if you plan on being there late into the evening.

Other than that the fishing is good back there. Check out the 'pits' that are a couple miles down the straight canal from the launch. They also have large expanses of marsh and little bayous you can dig around in. Great place to just take a ride.

Honestly, I'm kind of leery about eating any crawfish coming out of the spillway. Kind of sad we need to worry about shite like this.

+1 I would carry just in case. 2 years ago when we were crawfishing in there we had a couple sketchy characters stop on the side of the road and started asking a bunch of questions.

I worked out there laying asphalt one summer and pretty much everyone on the job site was packing.

Getting gas near there was way sketch too, only did that once.

Hmmm, well this all doesn't sound very fun. Just looking for a semi-close spot to go this Saturday morning.

I live nearby and drive Hwy90 daily. It doesn't have the nice and safe feel of Covington, but is not as sketchy as they make it sound.
It is free and you used to be able to get passes at the launches on HWY11 and the canoe launch on HWY90. I've paddled off the HWY90 launch and I'd have to be hungry to eat fish from there with the old dump mountain in sight. The HWY11 launch is your best bet.
Beware of gators, hogs and "cormorants".

fishing is outstanding in there... you will see some wild hogs..

be very carefull.....

a friend of mine used to fish there a lot and frog there before it was a refuge..

was robbed at gun point coming back from frogging once..

one time when were coming back from frogging(before he got robbed).. and there was all kinds of commotion and lights at HW 11..... when we got to the road.. we couldn't see anything but NOPD all over.. and two gangtas had been executed and left in the middle of the road.

I was in there one day and one of those gators just happened to come a little too close for comfort while I was in my pirogue. Eventually he backed off, but I started sweating for a few seconds.
