Benchmade sharpening angle

I have a Ken onion worksharp sharpener and I was reading the BM knives require a 30 degree angle on them to sharpen. Is that correct?

No. Its just a knife, you can use whatever angle tickles your pickle. I sharpen mine (benchmade mini grip) at 30* just because I find it holds up a little better than 20 or 25. Sharpened it at 20* for a really long time though.

I wonder if the factory angle was 30 deg and that's what the people I was reading were saying...and they just preferred to stay at the factory angle.

If you sharpen to let’s say a 20 deg it will require a good bit of metal to be removed. One thing to watch for is on the intial rebevel you do not allow the blade to heat up and damage the heat treat.

Probably so. Mines almost straight now so the factory edge is very long gone.
Fun fact- bemchmade will put a factory edge on it for free if you send it back. Their customer service is great

Not automatics unless you are a LEO or you have to follow some other process. Mine is an automatic open.

BM’s edge is bizarre anyway (cuts well so I’m not complaining)…and this is just after getting it back from lifesharp:
I’m not sure what kind of tool puts an edge on like that.
ETA: fixed the photo

They are manually sharpened on belts.
ETA: there is not a standard angle for a Benchmade. It depends on the model, and a few degrees on the person sharpening it.
FYI, if you have a sharpening system where you can set the angle, you can determine the original angle with a sharpie. Cover the sharpened portion, and adjust until it completely takes the marker off the steel.

Do folks DIY edges like that?

Guess you just figure out the angle by setting the belt parallel with your specific edge. Never seen one of these before.
Everyone who I’ve seen give a shite about putting a nice edge on a knife used a wet stone.

It looks like it's cut with a waterjet

Nah. I have one of those, it looks much different than the factory edge.
frick a wet stone. Those belt sharpeners are the shite. They are stupidly fast and do very well.

Out with the old, in with the new. I got a worksharp for Christmas.
My knives are like razors.
Scissors are super sharp.

I won’t get in an argument, but benchmade sharpens with a large belt grinder. They use a medium/course grit followed by a fine grit to knock the burr off. You don’t have to have a scalpel edge to have a sharp edge, a super fine serrated edge (if you looked at it under a magnifying glass) will cut as well or better than a perfectly fine edge depending on what you are cutting. And yes, you can determine the original angle with a worksharp. If it takes the sharpie off the edge only, you need a shallower angle. If it takes the marker off at the shoulder but not the cutting edge vice versa. A worksharp ken onion is the at home version of what knife makers use to sharpen knives. You can get an attachment for the ken onion to sharpen lawn mower blades, axes, etc. it has a wider belt.. It is actually pretty much a light version of how most knife makers put the edge on a knife.

I like doing it by hand also. I used a friend electric one and it did not get as sharp but it was fast.
I either used to use a small white Arkansas stone used something similar since I was a kid. But a good friend got me a lansky 5 stone system like 5 years ago and it's still going strong as I did was buy a diamond stone and the small table clamp piece.
I love it and after sharpening I can shave with the thing for a week

All my Benchmade’s I put a 20 degree angle on them with my wicked edge.

If I recall correctly, some years back I contacted Benchmade in regards to sharping a BM Griptilian and was told the total angle is 30 degree, 15 degree bevel on each side of the blade. So you’d set your Ken Onion Worksharp to 15 degrees. But I cheat, I send the knife to Benchmade for their free sharpening (you have pay postage) but on the upside I just bought another BM to use while the other was being sharpened.

It's functional and depends on the steel used. M4, S90V, and the like do not like a finely polished edge for optimal cutting and edge retention. They are steels with a high amount of vanadium and tungsten in the alloy matrix, very hard carbides that favor a toothier edge. My 20CV Crooked River was sharpened to a finer degree but it and my S90V 904-1 will shave hair off my arm exactly the same.

I’m no expert, so I won’t argue this, however I sharpen my Osborne’s all the way to a 4 micron cbn elmusion leather strop on my KME sharpener and it’s just stupid. It gets at least razor blade sharp.
As for the angle, my Osborne’s are both 22° from the factory and that’s what I keep them at. The KME sharpener is one of my favorite recent purchases. I get a kick out of watching peoples faces when I hand them their knife and its as sharp as their shaving razor
