I’ve had some hesitation with that round for white tail

Southeastern whitetail? No problem. I wouldn't pick it to hunt deer in Illinois, but if that's all I had I could put meat on the table.

Prices for any semiautomatic rifle is going to be nuts right now. Probably going to wait a year or so.

Really any expanding round would be ideal. While FMJ rounds are still plenty lethal, take advantage of the leaps in ammo technology to use something with a little less potential for collateral damage.

My buddy in LE says they stock their rifles with Speer Gold Dot or Federal soft points. I keep either Hornady Vmax or Speer Gold Dot in mine.

I have my rifle's magazine loaded with a single box of Gold Dots at pretty much all times if I'm not at the range. If I need more than one box, I'm in a situation where overpenetration is probably a good thing and the FMJ in the other magazines is my new jam.

I have some tracer rounds. I imagine the burning ball of fire through their chest might be best for self defense.

As others have said pretty much anything you stuff in a mag is going to be very effective at the ranges you want to be shooting intruders. Bonded softpoints have literally destroyed the chest cavity of everything I have shot with it from distances of 10yds to 150yds.

American Eagle 62 grain green tip is my favorite 5.56 ammo

I wouldn't use green tip for self defense. You will get 0 expansion and will go straight through your intended victim and possibly an innocent bystander.

Winchester 64gr powerpoint would probably be my pick.

Good luck finding it though.

That’s the problem with the round for CQB rifle; there is no such round for that gun that won’t go through a person and then into others, through walls, etc.

Allow me to both correct and enlighten you.....
...frangible rounds.

There are a few other situations where frangible ammo is used. The first is real-world close-quarters combat and law enforcement. Officers and military personnel can reduce the chances of over penetration in walls and targets by using frangible ammo. Because of advancements in metallurgy, powders, and overall cartridge design, frangible bullets have even been used in self-defense and hunting. In these cases, the bullets can penetrate a soft target without completely fragmenting like the bullet would against steel.

In some cases, frangible ammo is also used in special situations where bullet impact creates a significant safety concern. Security personnel for oil platforms, hazardous material facilities, or chemical plants may use frangible ammo to reduce the chance of a significant issue.

I've shot Hornady V max 223 and the "Z max Zombie" version which is the same thing. Just comes in a box with Zombies on it for fun. As far as I know they're the same. They fragment incredibly well.

I’ve got a good amount (>1,000) FMJ for practice

You call >1,000 rounds of 5.56 a good amount? I was buying multiple boxes of 1,000 on gunbroker during the scamdemic this April.

Like every other gun/ammo tread on this board, people offer advice with the best of intentions. But that doesn't mean you should be following their advice. ETA: Some of this advice is good. I'm just suggesting "why not go to the acknowledged guru ?"

For SD ammo recommendations, there is one name who stands head & shoulders above every other potential source of info: Dr. Gary K. Roberts (docgkr)

Enjoy: LINK

Ammo developed since 2016 won't be included in this tabulation. Doc has evaluated newer stuff in other posts. If you choose some "new & improved" ammo, I hope you choose wisely.

If I have time, I'll look for some of his newer tests. For those wondering who docGKR is: Credentials

Any expanding round is going to expand very violently at close range and might not even get full penetration.

.223 varmint loads are what I use for deer.

They don't run.

Anything within 10 inches is shredded.

Pulverized tissue is small. But shrapnel is everywhere.

What’s the reasoning behind this? Wouldn’t you want a blood trail and as little destroyed meat as possible?

Not saying you’re right or wrong I just don’t see why you wouldn’t want decent energy transfer and a pass-through.

Speed is nasty and 5.56 has plenty of it.

I've seen a deer shot with a .22-250 soft point at about 80 yards. Looked like you stuck a little baby grenade in his ribs. Not what I look for in a deer bullet, but it would be great for self defense. Instant 100% energy transfer and no exit. It probably penetrated 10 inches.
