Have a 7 and 10 year old and want to start taking them camping. We would be staying in tents and fishing and hiking would be our main activities.
What are best recommendations within 4 hours of Baton Rouge to start exploring with them?

Get out to Kistachi area if doing a tent.
if you are considering 4.5 hrs Lake Claiborne north of I-20 has a great park with a huge lake.
There are many others as well.
Paul B Johnson near Hattiesburg
Natchez State Park
Percy Quinn
Little Black Creek
Flint Creek
eta: There is a toledo bend campground that if you have a boat would offer asking to great fishing

Anywhere campsites specifically in Kisatchie you’d recommend?

in Louisiana
Stick to the state parks in Louisiana. Most of the private owned parks are either high end A-class RV's or have mobile homes with permanent residents.
My favorites:
Bogue Chitto
Chicot
Lake Fausse Point
The state parks are a little easier to deal with when starting out with kids. They have water and electricity at the tent site, and bath houses within walking distance.

Clear Springs in the Homochitto, Mississippi. Spring fed lake, lots of miles of hiking trails.

Chicot State Park
Lake Claiborne
The lake loop at Chicot is a great hike that has camping sites available on the lake that I’ve fished from many times. Lake Claiborne doesn’t have the hiking trails, but you can rent a canoe there and paddle across the lake to camp sites with a small dock to fish from.

Take them on an overnight canoeing trip in Mississippi. A great one not far at all from Baton Rouge is Wolf River Canoes just south of I-10 near Long Beach. I took my daughters there often when they were growing up, they loved it.
Lots of nice sandy beaches to camp on:
Easy system; you leave your car at the take out point and they bring you and your gear with their canoe, paddles, and life vests to the drop-off point. You can travel at your own rate back to their take-out compound.
There are other canoeing/camping opportunities on Red Creek, Black Creek, and the Okatoma River, but Wolf River is probably closest.

Black Creek is the best. Take the boys on that trip.

Kisatchie bayou campground is a nice one there.
You can drive back out and do some of the backbone trail with them. There's a nice loop that's about 14miles. Or when I took my son we just went like 2hours in, then turned around and hiked back out.

When planning camping trip, be sure to check if there is hunting season open at that location. It would not be safe to out walking in the woods, while hunters are deer hunting.

I'd be hesitant about camping out (by choice) anytime except in the dead of winter in Louisiana. Further north the better probably.

I would try to keep my options limited to in-state campgrounds if fishing is going to be involved.
Out of state fishing licenses are usually priced WAY above in-state licenses.
The wife and I were just up at Percy Quinn State Park and rented a cabin for a few days and the lake is beautiful. A couple years ago it was so choked with water hyacinth that it looked like you could walk across it, but it's clear now.
To fish there you need a Miss. license and there's a charge at the gate to fish there on top of that from what I saw on their site. At least that is what I was told by a La. guy and his wife who had their boat at the cabin next to ours.

The state drained the lake and reworked the dam after a hurricane. The lake is beautiful and yes they charge a day use fee. We camp there often even though we are only about 15 miles from it.
Op check out Clear Springs in SW Ms also.

If you like mountain biking, fishing, camping and archery, the park in Lincoln Parish is legit.
It may be one of the better bike trails I have seen outside of Colorado and Utah. I can’t believe it is in Louisiana.

What is the reasoning on this? We are new, so trying to figure it all out.
